Painted Grasshopper (Dactylotum bicolor) hanging out in the Gypsum Hills west of Medicine Lodge, Kansas.
Painted Grasshopper (Poekilocerus pictus), also known as AK Grasshopper, is a multicolored species of grasshoppers. It feeds on Calotrope (Calotropis procera), a plant in the subfamily Asclepiadaceae, family Apocynaceae.
A Pictured (or Rainbow) Grasshopper (Dactylotum bicolor), like these, is depicted on the cover of the grasshopper guide. No question why.

The Ak grasshopper is also known as poecilocerus pictus. It is one of the Painted Grasshoppers. It belongs to Family Pyrogomorphinae (known for cryptic as well as bright colours hence called Gaudy Grasshoppers and are also known for “Spear” shaped heads) and is one of the most colorful grasshoppers of India.
The nymphs display spots of varied colours from yellow, orange to blue and green. The adults show yellow and blue striped on head and thorax, a bright red abdomen, green-yellow forewings and red hind wings which are seen only in flight. The adults grow to about 60mm and are capable of good flight. The color in nymphs as well as adults is bright and warning and is explained due to the presence of toxic alkaloids present in Calotropis they feed on.
Their mouth is of biting and chewing type. The fore wings are smaller, broad and leathery. The hind wings are membranous and larger. They help in jumping.
The Orthoptera (from the Greek orthos = "straight" and pteron = "wing") are insects with incomplete metamorphosis, which includes the grasshoppers, crickets and locusts. Many insects in this order produce sound (known as a "stridulation") by rubbing their wings against each other or their legs, the wings or legs containing rows of corrugated bumps. Their ears, located in the front legs, are interconnected in such a way that they are able to locate each other by sound.

If anyone knows what kind of locust / cricket / grasshopper this is I would be grateful to know. I saw it in Jaisalmer in Rajasthan, India.

The painted grasshopper, has its name rightly given because of the vivid colors on it. It is unbelievable that this is its real natural color. It is also called the 'zebra grasshopper'.
And the brightest cricket I've seen. Heard but not seen for some time between the campsite and the excellent facilities.
Possibly Painted Grasshopper or Blistered Pyrgomorph, Monistria pustulifera. Definitely Monistria of some kind.
