Painted Grasshopper (Poekilocerus pictus) - is a large brightly coloured grasshopper found in the Indian subcontinent.
Nymphs of the species are notorious for squirting a jet of liquid up to several inches away when grasped It is also known as Aak grasshopper or locally in few tribal areas called titighodo. (wikipedia)

Painted grasshopper is one of the most colorful grasshoppers of India. It appears the host plant is Calotropis sp. (எருக்கன் செடி)
Rainbow Grasshopper, Painted Grasshopper, Barber Pole Grasshopper, Dactylotum bicolor variegatum, 20 -35 mm. / 0.8 - 1.4 in. Shortgrass prairie, desert grasslands, thinly-vegetated habitat and alfalfa fields. This species does not develop wings.

These stunning grasshoppers are native here and relatively common at least in some parts of the state, but this is the first time I've seen them for myself. Photos don't do them justice! The bright bold colors serve a purpose, too -- they warn would-be predators that these are not good to eat! Scientists call it aposematism; other examples include monarch butterflies, poison dart frogs, and skunks.

A painted grasshopper (Poekilocerus pictus) in a colourful ambiance in my garden !!! I found him perched on a oleander leaf and the background is provided by some pink oleander buds !!! Quite colourful, isn't it ?

Saw this colourful grasshopper in my portico today. This is called a "Painted grasshopper".
For the interested souls here are some facts about grasshoppers !!!
€There are 18,000 kinds of grasshoppers in the world.
€The grasshopper can live in all kinds of habitats.
€The colors of the painted grasshopper warn birds not to eat them.
€Painted grasshoppers hatch in May or June.

Striped blue and yellow, with finely veined wings, yellow lines running through the delicate surface that fades from green to reddish-pink, this is the Painted Grasshopper. Sitting pretty on a leaf of a poisonous milkweed, Calotropis gigantea, which is its food!! This large brightly colored grasshopper is found mainly in India
The grasshopper is an insect of the suborder Caelifera in the order Orthoptera.

Painted Grasshoppers ( Dactylotum bicolor (Thomas)) are known for their impressive coloring. This one was spotted in SE Colorado near the Purgotorie River on a bioblitz rapid ecological assessment trip earlier this year.
