Margaret Bourke-White - PRO77
WIT: Camp Richardson is a resort on the south shore of Lake Tahoe. Since the 1920's, its been a popular middle-class destination during the summer. I imagine this scene could be from any of those years, and is quintessential Tahoe, thus Margaret Bourke-White may have taken a similar photo if she were here during her time. I can't say it really matches any of her photos or compositional characteristics, except maybe for the repeating pattern of the trees. I think that's where I was getting hung on the emulation - most of her photos were a result of "being at the right place at the right time" (opportunity) and having a good photographer's eye. How many decent photographers wouldn't have recognized and taken the shot of the airplane with the city in the background, or of malnourished prisoners in concentration camps?
I decided to limit myself to a prime lens for this assignment since those are what she worked with. This was taken early in the month - I was initially hoping to get photos of the Great Gatsby Festival that was going on just down the way (thinking I could get an Bourke-White era, 1920's shot), but nothing came of that. But on the way we stopped at the pier (this one, taken by Ryanbot) and I saw some potential with this scene. I liked how the tree towered over the busy beach and vacationers. I ended up waiting about 5 minutes for something interesting to happen in the water until finally the paddleboarders went back out. I just got really lucky that there wasn't anyone behind the guy when he went through the middle of the scene. Incidentally, paddleboards just got really big here this year, they're all over the place, whereas before I might just see one or two a summer. I cropped to 8x10, converted to b/w, added a slight sepia, moved the noise sliders down so its grainy, and made contrast and b-w/color adjustments to bring the tree line out a bit - basically tried to make it match the documentary-type photos I've seen of Tahoe from Bourke-White's era. I really like how it turned out.

Sept 6 2012 - A Search and Rescue Exercise was held with US Coast Guard Sector Honolulu, Maui Fire Department & Ocean Safety and Rescue of Maui County. The exercise focused on a search for a missing paddleboarder off the coast of Sugar Beach, Maui.
Winds suddenly rose above 20-mph and some paddle boarders probably couldn't handle the wind. Mom looks attractive, so she was rescued. Worst case, is they blow against the shore and have to either walk around the lake, or stay put until the winds calm.
GoPro Featured Photographer - @donaldmiralle About the Shot: Competitive paddleboarders Dan Van Dyke of the #USA and Deon Lourens of #SouthAfrica paddle through a large school of leopard #sharks during the Mike Eaton Paddleboard Race in La Jolla, California on November 9, 2013. Given their name because of their distinctive brown spots on silver, leopard sharks are harmless bottom feeders that migrate and spawn in the shallow waters of La Jolla Shores in San Diego every year. How the Shot was Captured: I shot this image immediately after competing in a local #paddleboard race in honor of legendary paddleboard shaper Mike Eaton. When I finished I noticed how crystal clear and warm the water was for this late in the year, which probably accounted the larger than normal school of #leopard sharks congregating on #LaJolla Shores. As fast as I could I raced to my car, dumped off my paddleboard and traded it for my GoPro and Drone with a Zenmuse gimbal setup. After I quickly and safely set everything up and ensured I had a GPS lock for safe flying, I framed up two paddlers coming through a massive school of sharks which surrounded them in every direction. I had my #GoPro #HERO3Black setup on time-lapse mode shooting every half second to get the most out of the couple minutes I was flying, had protune on and the ISO was set for 100 to get the lowest grain and best saturation with the morning light. The automatic in-camera exposure ended up being somewhere around F2.8 at 1/750th of a second, so fast enough to freeze the action. I could see the what I was shooting on my live-view screen and knew I had something good, did a couple passes and brought the camera in with a big grin on my face. #SUP
