World Ozone Day (WOD) is observed on September 16, to spread awareness amongst people about the depletion of the Ozone Layer & search for affordable solutions to preserve it for the safety & security of the earth. On this day, people from all over the world are expected to join the Montreal protocol to join as one team.

It’s the international day for the preservation of the ozone layer by taking all measures to control total global production & consumption of substances that deplete ozone from our atmosphere. Ultimate objective is finding alternate resources based on developments in scientific knowledge.

WOD offers an opportunity to focus global attention & action on this vital environmental issue. The theme of WOD for this year is "Montreal Protocol - Keeping us, our food & vaccines cool". The refrigeration/cold chain is absolutely essential globally & it has a direct relationship on reducing food loss & food waste, protecting public health & supporting the economy. In this pandemic, vaccine movement is another primary requirement. The Montreal Protocol is closely linked to this critical sector & WOD is an excellent time to shine the spotlight on this often-overlooked sector.

Almost one-third of food produced globally for human consumption is either lost or wasted every year, mainly due to a lack of access to cold chains. Food loss & waste amounts to billions of US dollars a year; not only wasting precious resources such as land, water & energy but also generating an estimated 8 percent of total greenhouse gases, which have far-ranging environmental & health effects.

The ozone hole has developed in because people have polluted the atmosphere with chemicals containing chlorine & bromine. The primary chemicals involved are chlorofluorocarbons, halons, carbon tetrachloride. So, all nations have committed to phase down hydrofluorocarbons. While they don’t damage the ozone layer, these coolants are powerful greenhouse gases. Reducing their use is expected to avoid up to 0.4°C of global temperature rise by the end of the century while continuing to protect the ozone layer.

TAILPIECE: As an umbrella protects us from rain, ozone protects the earth from the sun. Ozone is like a “mother” of earth, who protects her child from harmful radiations. Never allow the future to go up in smoke. Revert the ozone thickness back to safe limits, save the ozone, save the life on earth.
