I've posted way more images than I usually do on one day. This is because I went shooting with a friend and we shots lots of the same shots and I wanted him to see the variety of choices that I made in cropping and processing. Light conditions were poor, so many of these are shot at ISO 1600, with DxO's PRIME noise reduction applied during Raw conversion.
This shot is Manual mode, but I exposed almost 2-stops over to get good detail on the owlet.
A First i thought i had just fallen lucky with the odd Little Owl, then I realised I had found its home, hunting grounds and play area, At this point i put myself into site protection mode, gained permission to get closer and more creative images. i hope you all enjoy these image I'm now releasing, its been a hard 5 month of wildlife studying. i think worth it in the end.
This was the hope that the parents would bring a Little Owl Owlet into the wildlife world, on this day it appeared posing for me.
Thank you for all the view and comments, and enjoyment out in the fields.
The two oldest great horned owlets are sitting on a branch outside the nest on the left in the photo. They must have flown to get to this branch. The nest with the two youngest owlets is on the right in the photo. Owlets start doing short flights among branches in the nesting tree when they are about 7 weeks old. The next photo shows the owlets close up.

After three days of hectic schedule, little sleep and intense work in office, there was no energy left on sunday afternoon to pick up any of the ongoing projects! I badly needed a perk me up!
So along with a cuppa I selected this adorable Owlet pattern, which was an instant attraction when I saw it first. And believe me, it’s an hour’s project and an instant perk up, when you look at the face of this cute fellow, though he manages to remain grumpy as ever! My two GSDs have been eyeing him very very suspiciously, so he had to be perched up beyond their reach!
Hope we get some owls back in their tree this year!!! They've been one of my favorite birds to photograph!!!!
Owlet pattern by Brigitte Read at Roman Sock: littlegreen.typepad.com/romansock/files/owlets.pdf
This is kinda a failure for me...definitely didn't turn out the way it wanted to. I don't think many people can even tell what it's supposed to be. Oh well...practice makes perfect I guess. I'll probably try this again in the future. The pattern worked out really well for most people- i think it was just me...

A little owl trying to catch her first mouse. as seen in 'Owlet the Great Horned Owl' by Irene Brady (Houghton Mifflin 1974) (No mice were harmed.)
A few months ago I had spotted this nest on a back country road not far from my home. There were 2 Red Tailed Hawks flying around it, so I assumed when I went back that is what I would find. But, much to my surprise a pair of Great Horned Owls have taken it over and have 2 little fuzzy owlets.

This is what the owlet looks like when it's trying to regurgitate a pellet full of fur and bones. I didn't see a pellet come out on this occasion, but I did see a full, adult-sized pellet come out earlier this same day.
The owlet has now disappeared from the nest. Hopefully it was strong enough to do some flying, and I hope, wherever it is, that the parents are keeping a good eye on it and protecting it from harm.

The spotted owlet (Athene brama) is a small owl which breeds in tropical Asia from mainland India to Southeast Asia. A common resident of open habitats including farmland and human habitation, it has adapted to living in cities. They roost in small groups in the hollows of trees or in cavities in rocks or buildings. It nests in a hole in a tree or building, laying 3–5 eggs. They are often found near human habitation. The species shows great variation including clinal variation in size and forms a superspecies with the very similar little owl.
The spotted owlet is a small and stocky bird, barely 21 centimetres (8.3 in) in size. The upperparts are grey-brown, heavily spotted with white. The underparts are white, streaked with brown. The facial disc is pale and the iris is yellow. There is a white neckband and supercilium. Sexes are similar. The flight is deeply undulating. The nominate form is darker than the paler forms such as indica of drier regions.
This species is nocturnal but is sometimes seen in the day. When disturbed from their daytime site, they bob their head and stare at intruders. It can often be located by the small birds that mob it while it is perched in a tree. It hunts a variety of insects and small vertebrates.
The call is a harsh and loud churring and chuckling chirurr-chirurr-chirurr ending with a chirwak-chirwak and they call mainly during early dawn or just after sunset.

The Jungle Owlet or Barred Jungle Owlet (Glaucidium radiatum) is found in the Indian Subcontinent. The species is often found singly, in pairs or small groups and are usually detected by their calls at dawn and dusk. There are two subspecies with the form found in the Western Ghats sometimes considered a full species. This small owlet has a rounded head and is finely barred all over. There is no clear facial disk and the wings are brownish and the tail is narrowly barred in white. There are two subspecies, the nominate form is found in the plains of India and Sri Lanka while malabaricum of the Western Ghats is shorter tailed and shows more brown on the head. It has been suggested that this may warrant full species status.
The plumage on the upper parts is dark black brown barred with white. The wing coverts have white and rufous patches. The primaries and secondaries are dark brown and barred with pale chestnut. The lower side is whitish or pale rufous barred with black. There is a whitish patch on the chin, upper breast and centre of the abdomen. The iris is yellow, the bill and tarsi are greenish with black claws.
