Spotted a Spotted owlet on a road side tree near Sathanur..on way to Somanathpur, KA, INDIA

Barred Owlets (Strix varia) BDOW

As I watched the babies over a few weeks, it was really fun seeing them growing up and changing. They were awake more and more often and looking around their surroundings......eyes wide open. The little one still hung low on the branches. They interacted often by poking at each other with their feet and beaks. I was always in fear of one tumbling off the branch. Whew...it never happened but occasionally the watchful parent would make a barky noise at them and they would settle down........or maybe it just sensed danger? They reminded me of playful, fuzzy kittens, but I could see their wings and feathers developing.

This spotted owlet was shot in bharatpur , it was sitting there for some time, and was trying to scare me ( I guess) took this shot, the moment it ducked and then flew off...

This Owlet was very comfortable to my presence , It was 1:30 in the afternoon and i went for a small trek, expecting nothing because of the lateness of the day. This guy was very well camouflaged among Pine trees and i did not see it until it actually flew from a tree. I had a hard time locating it the second time. This time it again flew and perched on a nearby tree in the open. I approached it slowly and strangely this time it allowed me to get as close i could get, a ridge separating us with a steep fall below. I shot it then observed it for some 15 minutes and then left.

This owlet is about 80 feet off the ground. Looks close due to the D7200 crop.

Great Horned Owlets Fort C.F. Smith Park. It appears that one has fledged. Wishing him luck.

As we reached the summit, we passed a sign for Owlet Lodge. Almost immediately we also passed a group of birders in rain gear.

With a little more planning, Frank and I could have broken our trip from Chachapoyas to Tarapoto with a day or two of birding at Owlet Lodge.

Reviews on Trip Advisor run the gamut, depending, I think, on the travelers' expectations and interests. Well-traveled birders seem to love it.

I was Joined by Friend Jim Chagares who made the trip down to photograph these Owlets on there nest located in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park.

The morning started off with heavy Fog, and we had a Narrow window of diffused light before harsh sun chased us off the nest.

Hopefully the rains let up and I can make it back down there later today or tomorrow before they Fledge, By there size and maturity that's any day now!

The three photos I am posting today were all taken in 2008 when my mobility was vastly better than it is today and I was able to get out and about in Knighton. I only had my litlle Fuji Finepix S8000fd at that time but it took a reasonable photo and was compact and easy to carry around.

On the day this photo was taken a friend had called me to say she'd seen two Tawny Owlets perched in a tree near her home. We took off immidiatley to find the spot and I got several shots of the sleepy pair who were perched perfectly in a lovely natural frame of branches : )

We went spotlighting and came across this road-side Owlet Nightjar. By far the best view I've ever had of this lovely bird, though we did come across my first daylight one outside a hollow a couple of days later (adjacent pic).

The spotted owlet (Athene brama) is a small owl which breeds in tropical Asia from mainland India to Southeast Asia. A common resident of open habitats including farmland and human habitation, it has adapted to living in cities. They roost in small groups in the hollows of trees or in cavities in rocks or buildings. It nests in a hole in a tree or building, laying 3–5 eggs. They are often found near human habitation. The species shows great variation including clinal variation in size and forms a superspecies with the very similar little owl.

This little owlet nightjar is a popular subject for birding people walking along the Wynnum Mangrove Boardwalk, in Brisbane, Australia.

Found these guys last year - haven't been lucky enough to find any this year yet but I'm hopeful...

The owls always land on this branch first, poop and stretch before heading for a lower branch for their hunting lesson with mother, this is usually an hour before sunset. Youngest (most beautiful) in the middle; she has more spots than her other two sisters, less wary, and brainy enough to head back to nest for food first!. Two of the young are quite inquisitive. These owls are true birds of habbit.

All five where said to be on the tree this afternoon. People pass by all-day and night so they are use to people and the noise from local activity dosn't seem to affect them.
