Asian Barred Owlet
Whenever I have visited my home town Palampur in Himachal Pradesh India , rarely have I missed the sight of this beauty around Aima. In fact I am yet to sight the spotted owlet or jungle owlet around this area. .
There are now TWO owlets in the nest! Sadly, I think the male was killed as the remains of an adult owl were seen nearby. I'm worried about this Mother's ability to defend the nest, feed her young owlets and keep them warm. I sure hope they make it!

Shot at sunset in Rochester MN. Quarry Hill Nature Center. This was the bigger of the 3 owlets that fledged first.
What an experience I had tonight. I was lucky enough to be invited to watch two great horned owls being banded by Richard Chamberland www.flickr.com/photos/richarddmann/
. It was truly a once in a lifetime experience as I had never seen an owlet before let alone have the chance to hold it. This little fellow decided it wanted to try and get away and not be caught and brought down out of the tree but it's wings were not flight ready and it was using it's talons to hang on to the branch upside down until it was rescued from this position and brought down for banding and lots of holding and petting. I really enjoyed watching all the little ones that were there as they were so enthralled with the owlets.

Birds are important part of the whole ecosystem we call nature; in many ways. They pollinate flowers and disperse seeds, they are wonderful to watch and this world would not be the same without them. All creatures, plants, animals, birds, humans, insect, reptiles, and fish were put on this earth to interact with.
Let's be kind to the wildlife, let’s give a better world to our next generation, together.

Owlet Nightjar peering out from its hollow at Campbell Park.
It wasn't visible half an hour before (nor half an hour later). My guess is something had recently disturbed it and put it on full alert.
On a hot Montana afternoon, most of the brood of six burrowing owlets was staying cool in the underground nest, but the male and one of the owlets ventured outside.
When I took this I had recently I learned the female parent had been killed by vehicle collision or predation - if the latter, likely by a hawk. The male continued to shuttle grasshoppers and other insects to sustain the brood solo.
This was the last time I saw activity at the site. When I went back two weeks later there was no sign of their presence. Likely the youngsters were out having hunting lessons with their father. As winter nears, they will migrate to someplace warm and without snow cover where they can feed all winter long. I will look for them next summer!
Although they can be hard to spot, burrowing owls are in fact very common throughout much of north, central, and south America. As their name suggests, they nest in the ground, typically taking over burrows excavated by other diggers, like prairie dogs.

Fledging is a difficult time for owlets, but this owlet is now high up in the canopy calling for a feed in the evening. #owlet #tawnyowls

Location: Tadoba Tiger Reserve - Maharashtra, India
A couple of hours before sunset this pair of spotted owlets looked ready for a meal. Their heads moved alertly from side to side. One of them seemed to look directly at me; perhaps it heard the sound of the camera as I adjusted the zoom. Ranthambhore national park (Rajasthan, India) seems to have many nocturnal hunters.
