A family of three owlets have been raised in a local cemetery. They have been great to watch and have grown well. They are flying more each evening so will soon no longer be reliant on Mum for food.

I finally saw the baby great horned owl. After the rain, it peeked out under its mother and enjoyed the sun.

Great Horned Owlet has just received food from an adult when I found it – It took a while to determine that I was as much a threat as its need to eat breakfast. Obviously a young rabbit was the meal for this time. April 19 2016 Edmonton.

This Indian Subcontinent endemic is one of the three Glaucidium owlets possible in the Himalayan foothills but the one that's most likely to be seen. Since its diurnal, one gets a chance to shoot them in good natural light. Corbett National Park, Uttarakhand, India. Feb 2012.

A 7 week old tawny owlet in woodland. Part of family of four owlets raised by a breeding pair in 2025 supported by a small owl conservation project on Exmoor.

this was a pleasant surprise - triplets this year

a lot of work for the parents though

I now have to work on my low light photography

This little one is about two weeks old and growing rapidly. The nest is in a pine tree in the center of a private school campus. The owls have used this nest for several years and are accustomed to people walking by and stopping to admire them.

High in the tree tops all snuggled in, a thrilling first for me.

Nothing says spring like big baby birds and bright baby leaves! A trio of great horned owlets allowed hikers along a busy path at a state park some good looks for a few days before dispersing further.

Bored owlets keep busy by napping and nibbling in between meal delivery. I love the expressions of this young great horned in this series of four images. “See, Mama, I’m eating my leafy greens! Where’s the meat?” :-D

Tawny Owlet taken in Merseyside

This Great Horned Owlet is the smaller of two and he was very active today , flying and climbing...His sibling stayed put in another tree and mom was sleeping nearby as well...until the crows arrived....

Have you ever been in a woodland and felt you were being watched? Photo Kevin Keatley, UK, Camera Nikon D800, 300 F4P,F14, 1/250 sec., ISO 320. Cameraand flash on manual.

The smaller of the two Great Horned Owlets finally left the nesting area a couple of nights ago or maybe early yesterday morning. I found her late yesterday and I am pretty sure this is her again from this afternoon/early evening. She is quite clumsy compared to he first owlet who was flying from tree to tree a few days ago. Its mother was nearby and down on the forest floor hopping from log to log looking for food ( muskrats I think) Jumior here split its time looking at several birds that were attempting to harass it, watching mom hunt and sleeping, preening etc...Twice a red squirrel came close to me and the owlet was fixated so it already knows its prey even if it hasn't got the experience necessary to catch it...

Like most Owls, Spotted Owlet is nocturnal, meaning they are most active at night. What helps them see well at night?

First, owl eyes have densely packed retinal rods. All eyes including human, have photo-receptors called cones and rods. Retinal cones function best in bright light and are responsible for color vision. Rods are much more sensitive and function best in dim lights. Owls have almost a million rods per sq mm (1,550 per sq inch). Humans have only about 200,000 rods per sq mm (310 per sq inch).

Finally, owls have “eyeshine.” Their eyes glow. Eyeshine is a result of an animal’s tapetum lucidum, a layer of tissue behind the retina that reflects visible light back to retina. This reflection dramatically increases the light available to the animal’s photo-receptors and gives a superior night vision. Humans dont have tapetum lucidum!

Tawny owlet fledging from first look at the outside world to the first flight. Now a couple of weeks later it's high up in the canopy being fed at dusk by both the male and female tawny owls. Filmed by trail camera. The River meadow, North Devon.

This little owl had just had enough socializing... time to catch a little snooze!!! lol

Hope everyone is doing well. Raining over here....sigh!!!! I sure dislike cloudy icky days where you can't go out....well you could but not near as enjoyable!!! lol...hope everyone is well!!! :)

So many photos to catch up on from last year. Great horned owlets still in the nest, with mama nearby. Oh yes and lots of sticks. As usual.
