Orignally called Bpl. Golden Peacock 'Orange Beauty', it is another hybrid of the famous Bl. Richard Mueller. The other parent is Prosthechea vitellina, originally Epidendrum vitellina, which gives this hybrid the bright orange color and the high bud count. This is still a very young plant, and already 6-7 flowers per stem. It will eventually get 10-20
Only 100 meters or so from the wash of the Japan Sea upon the dark sand beach, this street has only a few buildings that predate WWII, not due to urban renewal or war damage, but because of a number of fires that swept through the mostly wooden neighborhoods between 1850 and 1915. The big river that empties into the Sea is only 200 or 300 meters north of here. Brick was not common in construction, but those durable walls, boundaries and detail features remain today.
Looking at photobooks in the library's local history section turned up the octagonal shaped white brick building in the background with a scaled down version of one of the Trafalgar Square lions near the entrance. Its life as a bank was not overly long and later it served a variety of different owners and uses.

Orignally designed as a 3 man escort fighter it was modified in 1943 as a 2 man nightfighter with the upward firing guns in place of the radio operators postion.
On its first mission it shot down 2 B-17s.
This particular aircraft is the last surviving example in the world.
Notice the yellow wing markings, these were used by all WWII Japanese aircraft to aid friend of foe recognition in a closing engagement.

Quel beau souvenir...!
