My first Bricklink order! Got this from Scooter's Bricks

Originally for another upcoming Victorian house build, but it just turned out to be random.

Should be working on some building, but instead I've just been admiring this....

The server saw me taking pictures, and offered to take one of me.

Physical characteristics

Shape, stance, and habits much as Rufous-tailed Rock-Thrush, but noticeably bulkier with longer tail. Plumage dark and relatively uniform at all ages and seasons. Male dusky blue, in spring dull slate blue, with black tone strongest on back, wing, and tail. Female mottled dusky, dark grey-brown, with little visible blue tone and more obviously marked than male. Sexes dissimilar little seasonal variation.

Habitat

Breeds in W Palearctic in middle and lower middle latitudes in warm dry temperate, Mediterranean and steppe climatic zones, montane and coastal, rocky and nearly always in part precipitous. Occupies mountains from foothills to juniper zone, especially on precipitous rocky slopes above mountain streams, and on rocks strewn through forests, or sotne fields with thick shrub growth and scattered trees at low as well as high altitudes.

Other details

Monticola solitarius is a widespread but patchily distributed breeder in southern Europe, which accounts for less than half of its global breeding range. Its European breeding population is large (>120,000 pairs), but underwent a large decline between 1970-1990. The species was stable across most of its European range during 1990- 2000—including the key Turkish population—and thus was probably stable overall. Nevertheless, its population size has not yet recovered to the level that preceded its decline.

Feeding

Mainly invertebrates, also lizards and plant material. Feeds on ground, by pouncing on prey from perch, and by making short chases after flying prey.

Conservation

This species has a large range, with an estimated global Extent of Occurrence of 1,000,000-10,000,000 km². It has a large global population, including an estimated 240,000-530,000 individuals in Europe (BirdLife International in prep.). Global population trends have not been quantified, but the species is not believed to approach the thresholds for the population decline criterion of the IUCN Red List (i.e. declining more than 30% in ten years or three generations). For these reasons, the species is evaluated as Least Concern. [conservation status from birdlife.org]

Breeding

May-June in Iberia, April-May in North-West Africa, March in Malta, June in former Yugoslavia. Nest site is built in hole or crevice in cliff, under overhanging rock, in cave or quarry, in wall of old building, occasionally in horizontal drainage pipe or hole in tree. Nest is a rather bulky but loosely built shallow cup of coarse dry grass, moss, and some roots, lined with softer and finer roots, and grasses, occasionally with feathers and plant down. 4-5 eggs, incubation 12-15 days, tended to mainly by female.

Migration

Partially migratory in west Palearctic (extralimitally in eastern Asia primarily migratory). Vertical displacements common. Main wintering areas of migrants lie in North Africa and Arabia. Migrates singly or in loose aggregations, primarily at night, often with Rock Thrush. Timing of movements poorly known; passage rarely observed, even in Mediterranean basin, and difficult to distinguish between long-distance migration and local dispersal. Vagrants occur north of breeding range as far as Sweden. Most records in August or early September, suggesting reverse migration.

This was taken mid-afternoon. The temperature was still close to freezing and last nights ice was still on the grass.

I simply tape a list on my supply room door, so as I run out of materials, I jot it down so I remember everything when I'm ready to place an order.

St Mary's Abbey, Melrose is a partly ruined monastery of the Cistercian order in Melrose, Roxburghshire, in the Scottish Borders. It was founded in 1136 by Cistercian monks on the request of King David I of Scotland, and was the chief house of that order in the country until the Reformation. It was headed by the Abbot or Commendator of Melrose. Today the abbey is maintained by Historic Scotland.

The east end of the abbey was completed in 1146. Other buildings in the complex were added over the next 50 years. The abbey was built in the Gothic manner, and in the form of a St. John's cross. A considerable portion of the abbey is now in ruins. A structure dating from 1590 is maintained as a museum open to the public.

Alexander II and other Scottish kings and nobles are buried at the abbey. A lead container believed to hold the embalmed heart of Robert the Bruce was found in 1921 below the Chapter House site; it was found again in a 1998 excavation. This was documented in records of his death. The rest of his body is buried in Dunfermline Abbey.

The abbey is known for its many carved decorative details, including likenesses of saints, dragons, gargoyles and plants. On one of the abbey's stairways is an inscription by John Morow, a master mason, which says, Be halde to ye hende ("Keep in mind, the end, your salvation"). This has become the motto of the town of Melrose.

I expect that I have carried this subtlety business as far as I am likely with this capture. And no, I have no idea about the tile and am pretty sure that it is not even right. Believe it or not, this is yet another pass of pond #2 for exercise but I am still looking for anything that can be found. My camera carrying arm is going to end up longer than the other because I hate the neck strap. It is nearly December and I am hoping for fat snow flakes to fall, but then Greenland could use some snow before it melts entirely. It is not strange that it consists of sky reflections on rippling water. The rabbit wire wrapped around several younger trees about the shores leads me to believe that beavers are at work here. I have not seen a beaver house but the area is abutting wetlands.

On this day of nice skies and water, I came back to this spot I've used before with the intention of expanding my catalog. My previous take was one of my favorites. I am still fighting to slow this autumn's slipping away and I made another loop of the path but there was little breeze and there were only a few ripples on the water that ushered in the fine sky and foliage colors. I got a couple of shots of the foliage in the distance but it has deteriorated. I guess this reflection scene just grabbed me emotionally for some reason. Later, I decided to recapture earlier shots. There was slight but productive rippled water scenes and skies with some mixed clouds, water but the foliage is gone.

I am out here at Golden Ponds, the Longmont, Boulder County, Colorado greenbelt and rec area and fortunately, the turn-off is only a half-dozen blocks down Hover St. I met Dan the Longmont Man puzzling about how to maintain the habitat here. I wanted to look for possible locations even though the sky has been the pits lately. I wandered the green space and took some detail shots that were available, Drying cattails surrounded the ponds and most cattails are seeding the next year's supply. I shot a few pictures and kept the sky and bare trees out of the frame but the presence shows in the water. I am again fascinated by the subtle tonalities. The colorful autumn foliage fell around the ponds and under the water. I love shooting stark scenes with this camera and lens. I have not used any of my old Nikkors even though I programmed them into the camera's computer.

The Limited Edition Ariel and Eric Doll Set, #12 of 6000, in their display case, with the clear acrylic cover removed. None of the factory restraints have been removed, but I have cleaned up Ariel's face a bit, and cut off a loose thread from her blouse. Photographed using built-in camera flash.

My pre-ordered Ariel and Eric Doll Set, from the Disney Fairytale Designer Collection. It arrived on October 15, 2013, and I was thrilled to see that they are numbered #012 of 6000! It matches the number of the other doll sets in the pre-order, except that Snow White and the Prince is #4508 of 6000. There are some slight scratches on the gold nameplate and on the acrylic cover of the display case, but they are very minor, and don't diminish the look of the set. Ariel's head is posed a bit awkwardly, but I'll see if I can adjust it a bit without undoing any of the shipping restraints. There is also a loose thread hanging from the left sleeve of Ariel's blouse. Otherwise, Ariel and Eric look very beautiful, and in perfect shape. I'm so happy that I have them after failing to get them in the in-store raffle earlier in the day.

I'm not going to debox the dolls in this set, but I am going to take photos of it boxed, with the cover sleeve off, and with the clear acrylic cover off, to show off the dolls as much as possible without actually removing them from their factory restraints.

Fifty photos in the order that I took them on my Necklace Valley hike are in this album: www.flickr.com/photos/jlcummins_photography/sets/72157656...

I spent 3 days (July 22-25) backpacking in Necklace Valley which is located near Skykomish Washington in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness. The trail begins on an old railroad grade for the first 1.5 miles, on a flat bench that meanders through second growth timber. Along the trail you see large cedar stumps with springboard notches chopped in the huge trunks. The trail follows the banks of the East Fork Foss River for about 3 miles in mixed forest. There are a few huge cedar trees along the trail and after several miles a large meadow is visible through the trees. Then, at 5 miles, you will reach the end of the relativity flat trail where it crosses the river. Between 4 and 5 mile marks there are several nice campsite close to the river. Once over the river, the trail heads up through a large boulder field. Now, you will begin a steep upward climb, over 2,400 feet in 2.7 miles to the first lake. At 6.8 miles is a nice footbridge, with a memorial marker, dedicated to the memory of Michael Nesby, originally built in 1973 by the Trailblazers in his honor. From the bridge, it is another mile of steep uphill over terrain with lots of high stepping over, and around large boulders, mud, and tree roots. You reach the first of the Necklace Valley lakes at 7.7 miles (Jade Lake). You soon will come to a log shelter built in the 1950's by the Trail Blazer's, a Seattle based club that volunteers to stock fish in high mountain lakes. The shelter is in disrepair. The trail continues through the Necklace Valley, a string of small meadows between the lakes stretches all the way to the far end of Opal Lake at 9 miles. At about the 10 miles mark on a social trail that splits, one way to La Bohn Lakes, and the other to Tank Lakes is the last camp in the valley. That is where I camped for 2 nights. The boot track up to La Bohn is a climbers route to Mt. Hinman. I hike to La Bohn, the 2 Tank Lakes, and Foehn Lake. During the 3 days I hiked about 30 miles (48.2 km) and gained and lost roughly 5,700 feet (1,737 meters) elevation. Great trip! IMG_6622

Lineal Order is composed of three elements: A shadow on the wall; the life-size figure of a man; and a smaller figure of a little boy, both wearing a long coat. At the time I took this photo I was not thinking about the whole story of this statue…I do not have a photo of the little boy and did not get the full shadow behind the man on the wall. Guess I have to go back!
