Orchard Orbweaver (Leucauge venusta) - Suburban New Jersey, 25 miles west of "The City" (NYC).
These girls seem to like to set their webs near the ground, and hang on the underside, making it very difficult to capture their dosal side without disturbing the web. This individual was about 3 feet off the ground so it was a bit easier to get under the web, and the breeze was the main problem in making this capture
Between my puppy, my full hard drive, insomnia and some other computer projects that make me incapable of looking at my screen, I've had difficulty making time for posting to Flickr or my website. That should be remedied soon. I am happy to report that despite the little prank by Spring (an inch of snow and a couple night of below freezing temperatures) the jumpers are out in pretty good force and I think I have some decent shots to share. I've spotted Sitticus pubescens, Salticus scenicus, Phidippus audax and possibly a Pelegrina sp.. Not a lot else buzzing about in the yard — the odd fly, one shiny little black weevil, a stray plant louse — but it's coming. Photos to follow suit. :o)
I remember this was a very difficult spider to photograph. It was hanging above me in the trellis and I had to reach up to try to photograph it.
I found this little guy trying to weave a web on the outside on my car window today. He was teeny tiny.
These are really fascinating spiders - they make giant webs (this one was over 6' by 6'), they make them at sunset and tear them down at sunrise - eat the web to recycle it and hide in the shade until night fall. if disturbed the shake the web to tr and chase you away. They look like a crab.
They are the reason I do not venture far in to the back yard at night - I have about five of these living back there.
Found during a night hike in Marojejy national park, Madagascar.
