Zoom in!!! When I was starting out as an astrophotographer back in 2020, I got to know the Eta Carina Nebula (NGC 3372) in all its brightness and size in the night sky—a privilege of the Southern Hemisphere. While researching it, I saw that at its center is Eta Carinae, a hypergiant star within Eta Carina that ejected a huge mass of gas and dust. But when I tried to photograph it, I came across a challenge I didn't expect in a deep-sky photo: it's extremely bright! (in addition to being small). That's the difficulty of this object and the reason we don't see many amateur photos of the Homunculus. I will definitely be looking for more detail in this object in my next captures! The image is a composite of the nebula in the background and the Homunculus, with less exposure.

Sabe a nossa Via Láctea?

Do you know our Milky Way? With its famous spyral shape? That's what it looks like when laterally seeing! The stars have an orbit around a central supermassive black hole and gain this shape of a pancake. Eliptical galaxies (that we don't see in a distinguish shape) usually are older and made by the collision of spyral galaxies. This is the NGC7814. Capture made in a Bortle 4 site, using a filtro L-Pro.

Cygnus Wall - North America Nebula

Triangulum galaxy (M33 or NGC598) it's a spyral galaxy that is in an inclined position in relation as we see it. It has this name for being located at the Triangulum constellation. Although a big and bright target in the nightsky, this galaxy proof to be a tricky target, being hard to get contrast in the color captured image. We can see many h-alpha nebulae in its interior. This was my second capture of this object, being the first one made with the 1000mm telescope. Capture made in a Bortle 4 site, with L-Pro filter.

Centaurus A (NGC 5128), one of the most fascinating galaxies. It has a peculiar shape, is very bright, but also has subtle and faint details! Located approximately 10 to 16 million light-years away in the constellation Centaurus, it is one of the closest and most active galaxies to our Milky Way. The most striking feature of Centaurus A is the impressive dark dust lane that cuts across it. There is also a supermassive black hole at its center. By consuming gas and dust, it ejects powerful jets of faint particles that can be captured. I will definitely do more capture hours to bring out these ejections, including in H-alpha. But that will have to wait until next year, due to its position in the sky.

M87 or Virgo A. It's an elliptical galaxy with a supermassive black hole in its center. In fact, this was the first black hole photographed in history. Another interesting fact it's the presence of a relativistic/astrophysical jet (zoom in the picture), in visible light, issued by its black hole in each one of its poles. Relativistic jets are superfast and superhot particles issued when it eat matter.

After some time away from capturing these fascinating objects, I decided to return to them with renewed focus: globular star clusters. These are some of the oldest stellar systems in the universe. Here is the largest and brightest one in the night sky: Omega Centauri (NGC 5139). Visible to the naked eye and located relatively close to the Southern Cross, it lies about 15,800 light-years away in the constellation Centaurus. It contains over 10 million stars packed into a dense, spherical swarm.

NGC 7009, known as the Saturn Nebula, is a fairly bright planetary nebula full of details. It received this nickname because when it was first discovered, it resembled the planet Saturn, due to the jets of gas that are ejected laterally from the nebula. Planetary nebulae sharpen our curiosity about the stellar life cycle!

Planetary Nebula NGC 5189. A nebula with a fascinating shape! It resembles a twisted "S" — a peculiar structure likely caused by the interaction between a dying star and an invisible companion, meaning a binary star system. As the central star of the nebula expels its outer layers, the gravitational pull of the companion influences the gas flow, creating these curved and symmetrical forms.

Nebulosa do Véu

I'm finally starting to take full advantage of my new large mount — now also paired with a bigger guide scope. I've been focusing on some planetary nebulae, which I'll be sharing here. The first one comes alongside a star cluster: M46 with the planetary nebula NGC 2438. This alignment is only visual, though — the nebula is actually much closer to Earth than the cluster! You can see the nebula’s circular structure, the result of the final stages of a star like our Sun, which expels its outer layers into space.

NGC 7793 is a spiral galaxy located in the constellation Sculptor, approximately 12.7 million light-years from Earth. It is rich in detail, with its spiral arms filled with young, blue stars and star-forming regions marked by bright clusters of ionized hydrogen gas. It is part of the Sculptor Group, a nearby group of galaxies that allows for high-resolution astrophotography to capture sharp details of its structure. I will definitely revisit this object, as the exposure time was much shorter than I would have liked.

Whirlpool galaxy, M51, or NGC 5194 and NGC 5195. This is an object I find fascinating. Not just because it's a spiral galaxy, but because they are actually two galaxies in collision. Since it is always low in the sky where I live, capturing it in detail was a challenge, having to wait years to do it at the right time.

Challenge: can you count how many galaxies are shown in the image? At the center, you'll find the NGC 7793 Galaxy, a flocculent spiral galaxy located 12.7 million light-years away. This means its arms are more fragmented and "fluffy," composed of hundreds of short segments instead of a continuous structure. It's as if it's constantly "building" its stellar arms. It also has a high presence of emission nebulae, which are visible in red. In the second image, all the galaxies from the challenge are "annotated." Every single dot, often indistinguishable to the naked eye or even in my telescope, is another galaxy, much more distant. Some are billions of light-years away!
