I’m an optimistic futurist - that’s another way of saying that I can’t walk on stage and say to the audience “guess what! Your future sucks!” I wouldn’t get a lot of repeat business.
I’ve actually turned that phrase into a great storyline on stage - it resonates with people!
Yet, if you think about it, negativity is the cancer that leads to failure.
You don’t hear of Olympians talking about how they were focused on losing when they were at the top of the ski hill. Race car drivers who are relentless in their pursuit of last place. Game show contestants who want to walk away with the least amount of money.
Innovation is the same way. If you are going to pursue a new idea involving a radical new product or service, you need to be relentless on your potential for success, not the chance for failure. Your strategy must presume that you’ll win, so that you’ll do everything you can to ensure that you achieve that result.
Positive attitudes are energy and fuel for action, because they help to define the effort that we might put forward towards any initiative we pursue.
This is why you find so many leadership narratives focused on success and opportunity, rather than potential risk and downside. If you are going to motivate a group of people to step out of their ‘comfort zone’, you need to feed the enthusiasm that it will be a worthwhile investment.
Here’s the kicker - your positive attitude might not always lead to equally predictable results, it’s far better than the alternative!

Taken on the Trundle near Goodwood and Chichester - this was an old-school trailer selling ice-creams to those like me taking in the view southwards towards Chichester and the Isle of Wight. Taken in February, 2 minutes earlier there were very small hailstones. Certainly an optimistic seller!
Whatever the driver thought they were trying to achieve, sliding backwards into a stone wall and someone's garden was probably not on the list of "desired outcomes". Trying to drive up a 20-25% hill in the snow and ice puts it in the "likely outcomes", however

This is my second gladiola design for spring, in luxurious 16.5mm stonewashed crepe de Chine --- this a different color scheme than the chiffon. Both are painted directly onto the silk as I studied blooms chosen from the local florist. Brilliant lemon yellow overdyed with peach forms the backdrop; coral pink gladiolas contoured with teal add the detail and drama.

I'd very optimistically set my alarm for 3:00 AM so I could get to Algonquin and walk in to Wolf Howl pond for sunrise. When I awoke at 3 I checked the weather forecast online and could still hear rain falling so decided to sleep in a bit. 5:00 AM saw me up and out and on my way to the park. God bless the Tim Horton's in Bancroft, Ontario.
I came upon this handsome Bull already being photographed in this patch of wildflowers. I joined in and he seemed quite content to pose for us as he grazed. Another car appeared on the scene but failed to move to the shoulder while watching the Moose. The sound of squealing tires as the next car on the scene narrowly missed colliding with previous arrival was enough to send this bull dashing into the forest.
Please. Please. Please. If you are going to stop to look at wildlife in Algonquin Park get safely off the road before stopping. The road is also used by drivers who are not visiting the park but simply passing through. This includes large transport trucks and large military vehicles. Also, a driver may be too distracted by the moose he/she's just spotted to notice you in the way.

Mons Belgium - A €155m new train station, designed by Santiago Calatrava as a swooping sci-fi bird, is so far no more than a concrete foundation slab and some uprising constructions. It replaces a much-loved 1950s station by a local architect, and it’s now optimistically scheduled to open in 2018, having escalated to four times its original budget.
