Spring is well and truly underway, with all the optimism that brings of warmer days ahead, as GBRf Shed 66732 slowly trundles its load alongside the Sheffield & South Yorks Navigation at Kilnhurst.

The train is the 12.57 Doncaster Up Decoy - Mountsorell (6M23), presumably en route to collect a fresh load of ballast.

Not a lot going on with this one, but I quite like the relaxed pastoral feel to the scene.

It's a dreary day in San Francisco. Though we need the rain, it's hard thing to wake up to. I'm glad it stopped long enough for me to sneak out into the garden for a photo, but I'm back inside, wrapped in a blanket, waiting for the sun to reappear as I read more stunning headlines. In my waking hours I believe we can get through this. I am heartened by the signs of new life that peek out among the ferns.

“The true optimist not only expects the best to happen, but goes to work to make the best happen. The true optimist not only looks upon the bright side, but trains every force that is in him to produce more and more brightness in his life….”

The light at the end of the lockdown...

Oh the beautiful hillside by Lake Salsich. Soon it will look totally different as fall approaches.

After a dull and, at times, very wet day, I decided that things might be about to pick up so headed to Burrs for a potential sunset silhouette. My optimism of an improvement was not to be. Here, in teeming rain, Collett 6400 Class no. 6430 and its auto coaches head north at Burrs on the 15.45 Heywood to Rawtenstall service on the 24th October 2015 during the ELR's 'Western Wheels' Weekend.

Setting moon at Ruby Beach at sunrise.

I woke up early after spending the previous day photographing a couple of waterfalls in Oregon's Columbia Gorge. I felt slightly disheartened because I had arrived before the ground shrubbery had turned yellow and orange. So, I decided to head to Olympic National Park instead. Google Maps promised a five-hour drive, but I foolishly chose to attempt the entire Washington coast. I found a circuitous route to Astoria, Oregon, and started up the poorly signed Highway 101.

Along the way, there were many offshoots from Highway 101, and I ended up at a few dead ends. Circuitous became the word of the day, but the roundabout, indirect, winding, meandering, serpentine, tortuous, and twisting route didn’t provide a hint of the ocean until I reached northern Washington. Next time, I think I’ll defy my exploratory instincts and stick to the interstate. It did get interesting approaching Olympic National Park. I grabbed low-hanging fruit rainforest images but I did want to get to my destination before dark.

Just before the sunset, I noticed a full moon rising in the east, meaning it would be setting at sunrise in the west. To plan a moon-setting image in a rainforest is a fool’s errand, certainly I am the man for a fool’s errand. I awoke long before dawn and set off for an hour down the road for Ruby Beach; it was raining.

Situated on the captivating Olympic Peninsula, Ruby Beach presents a remarkable confluence of dramatic seascapes. This distinguished beach is particularly noted the striking sea stacks that emerge from the ocean waves, creating an otherworldly atmosphere that invites exploration and photography. Sea stacks are such a gift to a rugged shore to break op the monotonous of an endless sea. Ruby Beach ranks among the most recognized and highly sought-after coastal destinations within the Olympic region and I had it to myself because it was dark and raining slightly, but there was a promising glowing hole in the clouds.

Photographers are an odd mix of optimism tempered by learned pessimism. I discovered a charming composition while navigating through a tangle of logs along the shore, and for a brief moment, the moon emerged from behind a gap in the clouds.

Just having fun editing. I removed the 2 dark spots as suggested by T.Morris (thanks, i didn't notice them) and replaced the file.

Finally finding time to pick the camera up again. Liked the light play in the green stones. Also thought the 'light' theme was cool, because Garbo is doing much, much better!

Yesterday, our lawn was covered in snow and frozen solid. Then, last night in a big wind-storm and heavy rains, the temperature shot up to thirteen-point-something (uhh, that's like 55 degrees F.). And these guys appeared. Too bad, because already, by mid-afternoon, the temperature is just above freezing and tonight it'll be minus seven (about twenty F).

It'll be a few more weeks yet before the snowdrops get their flowers pollinated.

Several miles of walking along this logging road finally brings us near the forest trailhead that leads to Twin Falls. A most welcome sight.

Have a cheerful day, everyone... :)

Once I pondered optimism for the "in the future" challenge I just couldn't get it out of my head. I thought this photo was a good symbol for optimism :)

I believe if we remain optimistic, even through very difficult times, we grow! I also believe that if you are pessimistic through dark times, it will hinder your growth... (I could write forever on this topic, but I'd best go and make my tea :))
