I first saw one of these pistol grip tripods a couple weeks ago at the last leederville photographic market. My friend Branko bought it, but I loved its simplicity. When you squeeze the trigger it unlocks from the ball head attachment below allowing you to move it in any direction and when you let go, it grips again. Fantastic for quickly needed adjustments without having to unscrew 3 different grips and then screwing them back up again. I thought I'd never see another one till just a few days ago, my wife points out to me the same type of tripod in an OFFICEWORKS leaflet of all places! The centre part of the tripod also detaches to become a 1.5 Monopod! and all for $99. it was a total steal!

The second part to this photo, which you can't actually see are the two new HVL-F42AM strobes i just recently bought from another fellow PIP'er Damien (Fit to Live).

The beauty of these strobes are that they support the high speed sync function of my camera allowing me to shoot up to 1/8000th of a second, wirelessly and without the need of triggers and without any banding If you check the EXIF data on this photo you can see that this was shot at 1/1000th :)

Today's photo comes with great pleasure for me to present you to, the surprise new toy! One of my professors used to be an avid Canon shooter and had this absolutely gorgeous 1DmkII kicking around at home. As he now shoots exclusively Nikon, he has had no use for it in years. The shutter count is insanely low, and the body is in immaculate condition. For the price I bought it at, it was an absolute steal of a deal that I could no way in hell turn down. Essentially this camera will act as a nice replacement to the blazing fast 7D! It has a 1.3x crop factor which I prefer 100x over the 7D, and it still maintains the same 8.5fps as the 7D so this will surely be my go to lens at the track this season to stretch my lenses and grab some extra frames. The build quality of Canons 1D pro-series cameras is rivaled by none, and I have no hesitation that I could take this thing out in terrential rain with the proper lens and be more than safe! The permanently built in grip is also nice as I rock grips on all my cameras anyway.

This grab came as a surprise to me as I was not looking for another body as I am STILL waiting on my 5DmkII to come in this week and still posses my beloved 5DmkI, as mentioned it was just to good a deal to pass up.

The IQ of this camera is astoundingly different than the 7D, I feel as though it achieves FF like images which is a huge advantage for my tastes!

Anyways super happy with the purchase, I will try to shoot some of the coming days photos with it....maybe make use of the 8.5fps......

So I was feeling a bit bored, and at the same time, I wanted to test out my freshly made "Solar Lantern".

Anyways I saw some online instruct-ables on how to build a cool solar light. So I went to ikea and bought a mason jar, and borrowed the electronic parts, and put em all together.....and voila! A solar lantern.

Anyways, for the real test. I wanted to see what the difference between using a skylight filter on the amount of light it actually blocks. When I first bought my camera a while back ago, I was naive and didn't know better. The Black's employee convinced me that I needed a skylight filter to protect all my fancy lens from getting scratched. So I bought 2 OPTEX SKYLIGHT FILTERS (52mm). They were $14.99. Then I recently read an article online that cheapo filters (this one), actually blocks out a lot of light.... but how much worse?

So, shown here are 2 different photos. One WITH the filter (top), and one WITHOUT the filter (bottom).

Can you see a difference in the amount of good light that gets filtered out? These are identical exposure values for both shot, and haven't been edited in any way. Also note the reduction in sharpness.... I'm sure as hell not using these craptacular filters anymore.

Supppppppperrrr pumped about this today! So I decided since the last fiasco with buying that Seagate external drive was a total disaster and I ended up returning the product, it was time to look for a new option. I logged on to Future Shop's website and started looking at their deals. First thing that peaked my interested was a 2TB Western Digital MyBook Live Network drive. It was on for a great price and was ideal for my application. Went to the store and picked up what was the last one on the shelf. I noticed right away it was also the only drive that didn't have shrink wrap on it out of the other MyBook drives. I asked an associate why this was and he gave me a passive answer as to tell me that it was just because the shrink wrap was falling off and they pulled off the rest. I was skeptical still that it was not an open box product but I picked it up regardless as it was the last one and I needed the drive. I got home about an hour later and began to open the packaging further. Not to my surprise the anti static bag that contained the hard drive had been torn open to access the harddrive. Instantly I knew I was right at the store, and this product had been purchased before. I got ready to call FutureShop right away, but just in case I plugged the drive into my Router to see if it had been used. Once again, not to any surprise of mine, I was accessing "Kim's External" on the desktop of my MacBook.

After speaking with an associate from computers named Mike who I had dealt with for the exchange of my iPad (Great Guy), I learned that apparently there was actually one left on the shelves so he instructed me to come into the store to exchange it, apologized for the inconvenience, and hung up. Well when I got to the store and went up to him at the counter, he quickly hustled into the back and grabbed what I thought was the brand new drive for me to exchange. For the first surprise that day he stated "Hey Emilio, because of the inconvenience with the drive we decided to upgrade you to the 3TB MyBook Live drive for free!"

I was totally %110 satisfied, and it renewed my faith in why sometimes shopping at big box stores is beneficial.

Now as for the drive itself.....AMAZING. This thing is a dedicated network drive which allows me to access ALL my stored files from ANYWHERE in the world! Super convenient when I am on a trip out of the country or even just the city to be abler to never feel like I forgot that crucial file! Even better is the fact that with the 3TB storage now, I have room for days! On top of this I still have two 1TB usb external drives as well as a 640gb passport portable drive. The day I run out of storage now is the day hell freezes over......

I love this picture because of the green reflection in the water. Although my crappy optex tripod wasn't very sturdy, but I think its still pretty good.

This pile of caps and extension tubes volunteered for the test shots. This was 5 separate exposures blended in CS5. I used the macro slider to get the camera farther into the lightbox but never did any focus stacking with it.
