I attended the Nerd HQ Conversations for a Cause panel with Nathan Fillion. I figured it was my way of making up for missing the Firefly 10th Anniversary Reunion earlier that day at the convention center. Nerd HQ set up headquarters at a building a few blocks away and it was nice to have a more of an intimate setting with a smaller group of people and a Q&A with Nathan, who also brought along his buddy, Adam Baldwin.

As a Child Life Specialist at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital, Kelly Raymond spends a lot of her time supporting children and their families as they prepare for surgery.
Over the past two years, she has taken time off work to provide similar comfort and reassurance as a volunteer in Morocco, the Philippines and Ethiopia.
Raymond is among more than 5,000 medical professionals from more than 80 countries who volunteer for Operation Smile, an international charity that has provided more than 200,000 free surgeries for children and young adults born with facial deformities such as cleft lips, cleft palates and burns.

I attended the Nerd HQ Conversations for a Cause panel with Nathan Fillion. I figured it was my way of making up for missing the Firefly 10th Anniversary Reunion earlier that day at the convention center. Nerd HQ set up headquarters at a building a few blocks away and it was nice to have a more of an intimate setting with a smaller group of people and a Q&A with Nathan, who also brought along his buddy, Adam Baldwin.

This year's panel with Jared was just as enjoyable as last year's panel, although he didn't get a chance to do autograph signings this time around. Still fun!
A few months ago I mentioned that I was customizing a Destroyer figure for Argonaut Resins, but could not reveal it until it was time. After the long wait, it's finally time to reveal my custom! The Destroyer was designed by O_Negative, sculpted by Eric Nocella Diaz and hand painted by me. This custom and many others are now available in the Argonaut Resins shop. A proceed of the sales will go to the Operation Smile charity (which provides free surgeries to repair cleft lip, cleft palate and other facial deformities for children around the globe).
When I was thinking about how to approach his paint job, I looked to his design for inspiration. His huge bugged out eyes, clenched teeth and crazy hair made me think of electrocution, so I tried to incorporate that into my paint job -- with the jagged electricity styled shapes of ice blue, lime green and grape. This custom is by far my most intricate piece I've painted to date. I spent many long hours bent over him with my tiny brush painting precise clean lines. I hope you like him! :)

This is a selection of photos taken during a visit to a hospital in Kashgar, China.
The hospital was having a screening day organised by Operation Smile where families can bring children suffering from Cleft Palates and other facial deformities and have them reviewed by medical volunteers. The lucky ones will then be eligible for free corrective surgery.
Some of these people, many of whom are living very impoverished lives, had travelled hundreds of miles to be at the screenings, with no guarantee of a successful decision regarding their children, so the level of expectation/desparation was very high.
This mother and baby were waiting their turn to meet with the team of doctors. What really struck me about these people was their dignity and calm.
