This is a selection of photos taken during a visit to a hospital in Kashgar, China.

The hospital was having a screening day organised by Operation Smile where families can bring children suffering from Cleft Palates and other facial deformities and have them reviewed by medical volunteers. The lucky ones will then be eligible for free corrective surgery.

Some of these people, many of whom are living very impoverished lives, had travelled hundreds of miles to be at the screenings, with no guarantee of a successful decision regarding their children, so the level of expectation/desparation was very high.

This mother and baby has just completed their evaluation with the team of doctors. During this the little boy was rather upset and cried quite a lot. Here, he's visibly happier to be through with it all. What really struck me about these people, particularly the children was their extraordinary dignity and calm.

It's my personal belief that this is such a worthy cause and our simple contribution has such a far reaching impact.

Cydcor's Operation Smile medical mission diary: Today marked the end of two screening days. Approximately 250 screenings took place to make sure candidates were healthy enough for the procedure. People came from near and far - some traveling as long as 28 hours by bus and 7 hours on foot. The dedicated team from Operation Smile, medical and other volunteers, including the team from Cydcor and the field, got down to business. The volunteers helped with registration, photography, vitals, dentistry, medical records and speech therapy - oh and a lot of playing with the children and supporting the parents through the process! #cydcor #OperationSmile #BoliviaMission #ChangingLivesOneSmileAtaTime ift.tt/1TBqohq

SAVE A SMILE

devriesconversations.com

If upon arriving to work today, you were tasked with teaching someone to smile for the first time, what would you do? How would you articulate the steps for achieving this familiar expression, this universal language that creates connections among people regardless of age or culture?

We recently came across the opportunity to partner with Operation Smile through a campaign for Oral-B Satin Floss. Operation Smile, as an organization, does just that – help children achieve this familiar expression and universal language; a smile. We started the campaign to raise awareness about the importance of flossing and oral care and ended up with much more than we ever dreamed.

We were able to partner Oral-B Satin Floss with Dancing with the Stars Co-Host and E! News Correspondent, Samantha Harris, to act as the ambassador for the campaign. This fun, yet important partnership, took us from our desks to the set of Dancing with the Stars and finally to countries where Operation Smile helps children through Oral-B’s monetary and product donation. For more information, go to www.oralb.com/saveasmile and pledge to save a smile.

So far, we've raised $1,500 for Operation Smile with our tee-shirt sales at our Keys to Success event in Atlanta. We're proud of our success - and looking forward to seeing how much more we can raise!

T'Challa himself showed up at NerdHQ to participate in a Conversation for a Cause, where each audience member donated $22 to Operation Smile. Such an amazing person to have for a Q&A. Still can't believe I was in the presence of the Black Panther!

Kimberly, you were one of our top fundraisers who will also get to travel to New York City to attend the Smile Event. Why did you choose to support Operation Smile? "I support Operation Smile because it gives me the opportunity to change a child's life forever with just one simple surgery that only cost $240 to perform! I know how important having a smile has been for me in my life and my career and I want every child to have that confidence behind their beautiful smile. A smile is so important in life and in business. In our business we would be nothing without our smile. Every child should have the opportunity to have a great smile so they can go through life confidently. Not only is this charity able to change these kids lives, it's also able to help keep these kids alive. Unfortunately, without the surgery, most of these kids don't make it past their first birthday. I look forward to meeting other business owners and celebrities that share the same passion for this charity as I do. The Smile Event is going to be a great networking opportunity for me and I can't wait to meet so many amazing people at this event! Hopefully Kate Hudson as well" #GiveTheGiftOfaSmile #OperationSmile #SmileEvent #register #dayofsmiles ift.tt/1rXp394

Words from Cydcor's Operation Smile medical mission volunteer, Yesi: "Simply amazing. Words can't describe what I feel right now. I am impressed by the courage and strength these kids have. I was very touched by Paulina's story, an 11 year old who traveled with her brother from far away in hopes of getting the surgery that would restore her smile. I can't imagine everything going through Paulina's head; first time out of her village, seeing a big city for the first time, not being able to understand anyone but her brother since they speak a native language. She must have been so scared. Being in the operating room with her was an experience I'll never forget. Seeing her profile change before my eyes was unlike anything I've ever seen. The most incredible moment was seeing her look at herself for the first time. She was in shock, almost confused. A few minutes later, you could see tears rolling down her cheeks. I could not stop crying, I will remember that moment forever. I hope she smiles brighter after this because she will be in my heart forever." 💖 #operationsmile #medicalmission #changinglives #cydcor ift.tt/2m0S7KB
