To improve my almost decade old Mac, I decided to upgrade the RAM, processors, hard drives, and operating system. Nothing's gone wrong so far.

Tilda is the best darn thing for a geek's life. I really wish there's something similar in Windows + Mac but there's none. You can't beat a transparent overlay with a single-key open/close access. Here I use Compiz to blur the content behind the background to make things easier to read even in super-transparent mode.

With yesterday's release of Mac OS X Lion, it seemed like a good opporunity to do something with this archive of Mac OS System Install Discs that I've got. Especially since Lion, being a digital-only distribution, marked the end of the upgrading by disc era.
I'll look back fondly on the days of going to the store to pick up the latest release. Such memories of opening the box, looking through the booklet describing the new features (not that I hadn't already become familiar with them by reading all sorts of articles beforehand) and inserting that shiny disc. I even remember going to the local MacSuperstore for midnight releases!
But all of that is now the past. The new method of a simple download from the App Store is certainly quite convenient, but a part of me will miss the old ways...

IBM's OS/2 Warp 4 boot splash. You wouldn't believe how difficult it is to get to this stage of the installation on anything resembling modern hardware (hardware that is ~10 years old even).

If my ISP throws a wobbly and I lose my WiFi connection at home, it's great to be able to connect my laptop via my mobile operator with the WiFi Hotspot app that comes with Android.
It's a pity Vodafone's 3G network always seem to be at dial-up speeds, but its better than nothing :-)

Also available for Apple Devices; which is where I first saw it (thanks to boab22).
Way of coarse and about to crash (again).
Best game I have ever played on my HTC. Choice of carrier and/or airbase and currently choice of 2 aircraft (full version only). Great graphics & sound. No software or hardware issues (at least for the HTC One X).
Available from Google Play and Apple (sorry for my language) Store :-)
"... That means Google is slowly but surely working to erode Microsoft's monopoly. If browsers provide a high-quality, universally popular, OS-independent platform for applications, OS vendors no longer have any particular advantage in the desktop applications market. ..."
On the assumption that most users use this browser.
More browsers, more market split. Uneven as well. The question nobody has answered is how is this new Chrome browser going to get on computers? Downloaded by users? Mandated by companies? or shipped on new operating systems?
some time later...
"... As we saw with the example of search engines, a new competitor may split an existing market ..."
This is a different beast.
It's consumer binary software. You have to download it, install it, tune it, learn it. The browser is now what the OS was to applications. It's just another hurdle for constrained users to jump. With search engines you just point your browser with a different url.
some time later...
"... Good lord did you even think about what you just wrote? Its a browser, not a torture device! ..."
Keep your emotions in check, ad hominem.
and a bit later...
"... Good lord did you even think about what you just wrote? Its a browser, not a torture device! ..."
Can you explain the how this language adds to the discussion without resorting to ridicule?
"... I could care less about your thread ..."
Chrome has the potential to be just as closed as MS (bad), Apple because the real power is in who controls the commits. Do you have any worthwhile to add about how Chrome could become another closed system?
The next day
I had some time yesterday to read through the entire document. This particular section to me is probably the most significant. Google has done some great work. They have released all this work with an opensource license, componentise it, document it. One thing they didn't decouple is the use of their pageranked testing.
Testing for the browser will be against their own data set. Google controls the data collection. And while they are fanatical about not altering the algorythm (cf: Joel Spolskys explanation of the Google term "Jew" and how google has taken great pains by taking out an advert explaining why they do not make exceptions and the ranking is a reflection of how people use the data).
They do however control how the browser will behave against their dataset. The browser is automatically tuned to perform best on the pages google ranks. Think about the implications of that.
