I recently switched to UBUNTU a free debian/linux operating system and I'm loving it. Comes with everything you need and most software is free. You can try it first all you need is a cd burner and 700mb cd. Copy op/sys to disk and reboot. you can; try it, partition it (running beside windows), or fully install it. I scrapped windows, so Had to pre-burn all my files and pics to disk's. only draw back is battery usage on laptops for people on go might want to upgrade your batt. One program I suggest is "wine" because it lets you use and download alot of windows programs in linux.

Alt.nerd.obsessive

A response to How to get along with geeks: A seven-point guide by Bronwen Clune (@bronwen). A slightly edited version should appear in the comments.

"... #2 You’re in the Windows or Mac camp ..."

Don't know about this one. Where's *nix or BSD?

Windows users are either using a *work* laptop or require specific Windows software. As for the *cult of Mac* don't be fooled by these users who are really using higher quality, but over priced hardware with BSD Operating System. [0]

"... #1 You can ask stupid questions ..."

Nothing will generate more heat in geek culture than non-geeks, newbies or other geeks asking a *stupid* question, then requiring an instant answer. What geeks really mean by *stupid* is a) "have you looked for the answer in the FAQ, read the HOWTO or searched google, *before* asking me?" [1] then b) "the answer is obvious" but left out the fact you require a degree in CS/EE or to have been using computers before they could walk to understand the answer.

" #1 '... most do not hold a deeper general knowledge than your average citizen. They appear to know a lot courtesy of Google. Most questions can be answered by a simple Google search' ..."

Distractions suck. If your geek mates/co-worker appear to be giving you canned responses from Google, they probably are. Maybe because they think the asker of the question should have done some homework in the first place. The statement also mis-represents geeks strengths in knowledge. Geeks strengths are technical depth not pop-culture breadth.

Try searching Google for the finer points of "language compiler optimisations" or solutions to problems "debugging objectiveJ" to understand what I mean. There should be a bit of give and take here. You get to understand things by learning. Learning takes hard work. The mental equivalent of doing push-ups or lifting weights. No pain, no gain. But what happens if you don't have enough knowledge. Where do you start? Google? Ordinary users are probably not used to the mental gymnastics required to absorb the volume and frequency of technical information thrown at them. So stupid questions for geeks/ordinary users is and will be a potential flash point. Are the nerds and geeks, bullied in High School replaying what happened to them at school?

A change in geek culture is needed here. It's happening, but slowly. The "social software" movement is sort-of changing this as geeks liberated from their cubicles get together with ordinary users to build companies. Ordinary users shouldn't be intimidated by geeks when asking questions. It's bullying in another form and shouldn't be tolerated.

"... #4 You get South Park and Star Wars quotes ..."

Everyone knows geeks hang out on alt.nerd.obsessive. [2] [3]

When we think of #Apple and its #operatingsystem, we usually do not think about #gaming. But Apple offers a subscription service which opens the doors to a lot of arcade games which you can place on Apple devices. This service is widely known as Apple Arcade. This service costs $4.99 per month after a free one-month trial. And there are more than 100 games that you can play on the screen of your Apple device after getting that subscription.

Good thing about this service is that it allows you to download games in your Apple device. This way, you can start playing offline. Apple TV, controllers of Xbox and PlayStation, and other Bluetooth controllers are now supported by the software updates to #iOS 13 and #iPadOS.

In this scenario, you may wonder about the hardware needed to play Apple Arcade games. In this article, we are going to discuss about that hardware.

IPhone 11

Battery performance is one of the most important things for the smartphones. On paper, the battery of iPhone 11 can last one hour more than #iPhone XR. This battery performance makes iPhone 11 the perfect candidate to play arcade games on. Although iPhone 11, 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max are made specifically to meet the hardware requirements for Apple Arcades, older iPhones running iOS 13 can also run this service.

IPad 7th generation

IPads come with larger screens which are ideal to play games. The new seventh-gen iPad has 10.2-inch screen which offers more space for a better gameplay. It is worth mentioning here that you can also play arcade games on fifth- and sixth-gen iPad, fourth- and fifth-gen #iPad Mini, and second- and third-gen iPad Air. All of these Apple devices are compatible to latest version of iPadOS.

IPad Pro

IPad Pro comes with an even larger 12.9-inch screen. Good thing is that all models of the iPad pro support Apple Arcade.

MacBook Air

MacBook Air laptops released in 2018 and 2019 are equipped with True Tone Technology, larger touchpads, higher screen resolution, and better speakers. All of these features make these laptops ideal for playing arcade games.

MacBook Pro

The 2019 version of MacBook Pro is equipped with a quad-core Intel CPU which tends increase the processing capability of laptop in general. Thus, you can expect this laptop to do well when you play Arcade Games no it.

IMac

IMac is available with 21.5 and 27-inch displays. With larger screens, you can imagine the type of gameplay experience that you can have. And the best thing is that there are the options to set screen resolutions at 4K and 5K.

Today, I went in the Apple Store and I bought this iTunes Card because I want to will able to upgrade the OSX Lion in Mountain Lion 10.8

Spent a couple of days last week working with installing Snow Leopard 10.6.4 on my i7 machine.

Windows 7 Ultimate x64 is on a secondary drive. Steam and Starcraft II both work well.

The Atari TT030 casing is looking pretty good, though I still have some work to do on it. The Atari Mega ST keyboard (I wish I could find a TT keyboard), which I thought was pretty much hopeless after working on it yesterday, is starting to come around (you can see it returning to the natural gray color on the right-hand side). If you browse a page or so into my photostream, you'll be able to see what it looked like when I started. I'll probably leave the cigarette burn as it is.

Tilda is the best darn thing for a geek's life. I really wish there's something similar in Windows + Mac but there's none. You can't beat a transparent overlay with a single-key open/close access. Here I use Compiz to blur the content behind the background to make things easier to read even in super-transparent mode.

really dislike the brown Ubuntu color. unfortunately, Ubuntu Netbook Remix was installed by default. and it's a hassle to remove it.

when i can't stand the brown color anymore, i'll put Linux Mint on it like i did to a different computer (except that one had a DVD rom drive, so it was easier to install).

From Ubuntu.com :

"Ubuntu is a community developed operating system that is perfect for laptops, desktops and servers. Whether you use it at home, at school or at work Ubuntu contains all the applications you'll ever need, from word processing and email applications, to web server software and programming tools.

Ubuntu is and always will be free of charge. You do not pay any licensing fees. You can download, use and share Ubuntu with your friends, family, school or business for absolutely nothing.

We issue a new desktop and server release every six months. That means you'll always have the latest and greatest applications that the open source world has to offer.

Ubuntu is designed with security in mind. You get free security updates for at least 18 months on the desktop and server. With the Long Term Support (LTS) version you get three years support on the desktop, and five years on the server. There is no extra fee for the LTS version, we make our very best work available to everyone on the same free terms. Upgrades to new versions of Ubuntu are and always will be free of charge.

Everything you need comes on one CD, providing a complete working environment. Additional software is available online.

The graphical installer enables you to get up and running quickly and easily. A standard installation should take less than 25 minutes.

Once installed your system is immediately ready-to-use. On the desktop you have a full set of productivity, internet, drawing and graphics applications, and games.

On the server you get just what you need to get up and running and nothing you don't".

Ubuntu is available in many languages, including French and Dutch.

Operating Systems of visitors to my website, 2007 vs 2011.

Windows has lost, Mac gained, Linux held steady. Mobile devices didn't even exist as a category before a couple of years ago.

In absolute numbers, SunOS has actually held steady even though it doesn't appear in the top 10. HP-UX has dropped off completely.

Compare against March 2011 values reported at Wikipedia, which says Mac has only a 7% share of web clients, which means Macs are highly overrepresented at Cyclelicious.

Blender blender.org is my preferred 3d design environment. I use it on all platforms. It's free and once you get a hang of it you would never go back. Together with the abundance of python extensions written for it you can do magic. You can render things with insanely fabulous and super-fast results using the nVidia gelato engine blogs.nvidia.com/gelato/ which uses your nVidia video hardware as a hardware accelerator. Uber cool + free as well!!!
