Elfdoll lovely Dami

With Easter approaching I looked through my library to post something refreshing, to drive out the remains of winter… hopefully. More to come…

The Tawny Frogmouth, Podargus strigoides, is a nocturnal hunter whose plumage blends well with the tree trunks it sleeps against during the day. This adult is more exposed than usual, roosting among the leaves of a young gum tree.

After painting with a few acrylic paint colors, the wound blends in pretty well. I think I'm going to resist temptation to play with the paint job for a bit. Once the gloss fades I'll see how it looks.

I'll also irritate the egdes of the scar to encourage the tree to continue to try to close the hole. Now that it has someothing to support the new growth it should close over the next few years.

This is the tree we're working on.

Here it is after its first repot. I may add the dead tree back into the group later. Ideally I'll find one or more little ones to add in the future.

I timed the repotting perfectly; within two days it began bursting out green.

If I could look across the country

From California to New Jersey

Then I would count the parks and lake resorts

And number all the jets and airports

All those rather dreary rain clouds still bother me

Cuz I look through the camera eyepiece and cannot see

If I could open up my window

And see from Tampa Bay to Juneau

Then I would survey all those open miles

And line them up in single file

Everywhere I look I see green scenic sublime

And all those oceanic vistas are so divine

If I was standing on the balcony

And you were walking down below

I'd feel rather depressed and out of place

And lonely just to watch you go

If you were swinging from the highway overpass

Within the western hemisphere

I'd feel rather afraid and insincere

If you began to disappear

If I was walking through a sad art gallery

And you were driving through the night

I'd feel rather alone and ill at ease

Beneath the brilliant showroom light

If I was flying on a plane above your town

And you were gazing at the sky

Somehow I'd feel intact and reassured

If you began to wave goodbye

Here's the beginning of the new tree. Right now it has no roots at all, but being late July in New England it should be hot enough to let this develop all the roots it needs within a few weeks. A picture with a lens cap for scale is here.

When I was younger

I saw my daddy cry

And curse at the wind

He broke his own heart

And I watched

As he tried to reassemble it

And my momma swore that

She would never let herself forget

And that was the day that I promised

I'd never sing of love

If it does not exist

But darling,

You, are, the only exception

You, are, the only exception

You, are, the only exception

You, are, the only exception

Maybe I know, somewhere

Deep in my soul

That love never lasts

And we've got to find other ways

To make it alone

Keep a straight face

And I've always lived like this

Keeping a comfortable, distance

And up until now

I had sworn to myself that I'm

Content with loneliness

Because none of it was ever worth the risk

Well, You, are, the only exception

You, are, the only exception

You, are, the only exception

You, are, the only exception

I've got a tight grip on reality

But I can't

Let go of what's in front of me here

I know you're leaving

In the morning, when you wake up

Leave me with some kind of proof it's not a dream

Ohh---

You, are, the only exception

You, are, the only exception

You, are, the only exception

You, are, the only exception

You, are, the only exception

You, are, the only exception

You, are, the only exception

You, are, the only exception

And I'm on my way to believing

Oh, And I'm on my way to believing

Here's another one on a nice black background.

Here's a recent photo of my small Colorado blue spruce after wiring it with Colin Lewis on Friday. One more year of development (or so) and it'll be ready for a bonsai pot.

This is the second wiring of this tree since the real styling began. Here is the tree in April after the first wiring. The wire was removed as the spring growth swelled the branches. This wire will remain on until early summer.

This is my weeping-habit Scots pine after working on it today. I removed all of the wire and pulled needles to allow light and air into the tree. It looks thinner and less well-shaped than its last photo, but this work in necessary for the future development of the tree.

This tree is really coming along nicely. A few more years and it will be ready to show.

The last photo is here. Here's the tree in spring 2007.

Here's one of my Hinokis after working it with Sandro Segneri this week. He shaped the bottom three branches for me, I finished the tree yesterday. Can't wait to get it into a bonsai pot.

Here is the tree two years ago. In person the depth of th rear branches is less confusing than it appears in the photo.
