Olvera Street is in the oldest part of Downtown Los Angeles, California, and is part of the El Pueblo de Los Angeles Historic Monument. Many Latinos refer to it as "La Placita Olvera." Circa 1911 it was described as Sonora Town.
Having started as a short lane, Wine Street, it was extended and renamed in honor of AgustÃn Olvera, a prominent local judge, in 1877. There are 27 historic buildings lining Olvera Street, including the Avila Adobe, the Pelanconi House and the Sepulveda House. In 1930, it was converted to a colorful Mexican marketplace. It is also the setting for Mexican-style music and dancing and holiday celebrations, such as Cinco de Mayo.

April 2019 - Above the 'Plaza de Andalusia' in the centre of Olvera is the garden of el Peñón del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús (the Rock of the Sacred Heart of Jesus). At the top of the rock, with arms raised is the impressive statue of Christ carved by Jose Even Navas, in 1929. Some photos taken in this attractive haven of peace and tranquility.

Olvera Street is one of the oldest parts of downtown Los Angeles, located across from Union Station. Spanish settler families set up a pueblo near the Los Angeles River in 1781. The oldest remaining building is the Avila Adobe (1811) located in the center of Olvera Street's Mexican marketplace. The "Old Plaza Church" (1822) is still in use today.

Friday, April 6th, 2012 - The 'Procesión del Santo Entierro' (Holy Burial) starts on Good Friday at around 6pm and goes on well into the night. On this particular day, it was cold and damp but that did little to deter the participants and onlookers. Arguably the most important date in the Andalucian calendar is the 'Semana Santa' - the Holy Week processions. Accompanied by 'nazarenos' and marching bands, the carrying of the floats or 'pasos' through the steep and narrow streets of Olvera can take up to 8 gruelling hours to complete. It's a tremendously tough challenge for the men and women of the local brotherhoods who carry these 'pasos' but one which they do with much pride and fortitude. A truly magnificent spectacle!
