October 2012 - impressive cactus plant in 'el Peñón del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús' (the Rock of the Sacred Heart of Jesus), a beautiful rock garden in the heart of the town. Just a couple of kilometres east of Olvera, on the main Jerez to Antequera road, is an old farmhouse with the ruins of an even older fortress above it. The surrounding views are wonderful. Near the top of Calle del Calvario, there used to be a charming bronze statue of two children at play. Unfortunately it's no longer there - (update) although it has subsequently been relocated to another part of town. Olvera Street is in the oldest part of Downtown Los Angeles, California, and is part of the El Pueblo de Los Angeles Historic Monument. Many Latinos refer to it as "La Placita Olvera." Circa 1911 it was described as Sonora Town.
Having started as a short lane, Wine Street, it was extended and renamed in honor of Agustín Olvera, a prominent local judge, in 1877. There are 27 historic buildings lining Olvera Street, including the Avila Adobe, the Pelanconi House and the Sepulveda House. In 1930, it was converted to a colorful Mexican marketplace. It is also the setting for Mexican-style music and dancing and holiday celebrations, such as Cinco de Mayo.

April 2019 - Above the 'Plaza de Andalusia' in the centre of Olvera is the garden of el Peñón del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús (the Rock of the Sacred Heart of Jesus). At the top of the rock, with arms raised is the impressive statue of Christ carved by Jose Even Navas, in 1929. Some photos taken in this attractive haven of peace and tranquility.
