the front light of an old, rusted bicycle tells tales of bygone days. parked outside a quaint restaurant in port d'andratx, mallorca, this relic of the past captures the charm of yesteryears. the close-up focus on the light reveals intricate details of wear and time, the patina of rust adding character to the scene. it stands as a testament to countless journeys taken, now at rest, whispering stories to those who pass by.
This bike's from 1903-1904.
You'll notice it doesn't run on coal...!
It used paraffin. Like other steam vehicles it had to 'get up steam'. So you light the burner, go back indoors for breakfast, and then you're ready to go..lol
Belt drive and being steam it needed no gears or clutch or starter of any kind and only had a bicycle type stirrup brake on the front wheel.
Also it ran almost without any noise at all.
iPhone Snapshot of the week:
An old bike with an milk churn. This bike was build during the 30th's in Germany. Special technical skill is a gear change which is inserted into the bottom bracket.
The building company Bismarck was insolvent into 1958.
Today some retro versions of this bike are availibe and very popular in Germany.

1914 Terrot Motorette 3 - 317cc Zedel-Terrot "Motor 300" single cylinder 4-stroke engine - 3 bhp - Zedel carburettor - Bosch magneto ignition - no gearbox - belt drive - 6,5 liter fuel tank - 600x55 tires - wheelbase 49.2 inch - curb weight 80 kg - top speed 65 km/h
- built between 1912 and 1919 by TERROT & Cie, Dijon - France
Here's some extra info...*
The bike you show has no gearbox, no gears, no clutch. Its the basic model with single speed 'V' belt and pulley drive. It was a case of getting on and pedalling along until the engine fired. This had to be done every time you stopped.
A few hundred were made for the army in 1914 with a primary drive, clutch and 2 speed gearbox but were rejected and Terrot went back to the old system.
A simple clutch in the front engine pulley, a variable engine pulley (for a sort of gearing without gears) and a form of rear suspension were available but only as optional extras.
The only brake was a single shoe bicycle type on the rear pulley and a spare spark plug was fitted in a little carrier on the frame! The small wheel at the bottom between the engine and rear wheel is a belt tensioner to stop it slipping round the pulleys.
