Although many of Hawksmoor's buildings give me the willies, they hold me in complete fascination. The imagination that produced this formidable looking building really took his thinking beyond the Baroque way of building, it was if it was set in the future.
Peter Ackroyd describes it as "wonderful but barbaric" London - The Biography.
Ian Nairn writes:
"The is the one City church you must go in. By comparison all Baroque churches on the Continent seem overloaded and hysterical. Here, intellect and emotion are exactly matched; the whole man in the designer was stretched to the uttermost. And the viewer is stretched too"
Greg Brown is a painter and native of Palo Alto, California, best known for his trompe l'oeil murals in the San Francisco Bay area. He sprang into national prominence with his "Pedestrian series of 1976." The project included 9 trompe l'oeil figures/vignettes sprinkled throughout the downtown area of Palo Alto, California. This experience spawned a love affair with walls that continues to this day.
