Sefydlwyd yr Abaty Sistersiadd yma yn 1143 gan Faredudd ap Madog ab Iorweth, a'i ailsefydlu yn 1176 gan ei frodyr, Cadwallon ac Einion Clud.
Codwyd yr eglwys fawr yn gynnar yn y 13eg ganrif, a chorff yr eglwys hon oedd yr hwyaf yng Nghymru. Gellid cymharu ei 14 cilfach â'r hyn a geir yng Nghaer-gaint; dim ond deg cilfach sydd gan Wells hyd yn oed. Mae'r adfeilion yn drist ac yn siomedig yr olwg.
Yn 1282 claddwyd Llywelyn y Llyw Olaf yn yr eglwys, wedi ei ladd ac wedi torri ei ben gan y Saeson. Arddangoswyd y pen yn Llundain i ddangos mai Lloegr a fyddai'n penderfynu tynged Cymru o hynny ymlaen.

This Cistercian Abbey, Cwm-hir, was established in 1143 by Maredudd ap Madog ab Iorwerth, and re-established in 1176 by his brothers.
The great church was erected at the beginning of the 13th century, and it had the longest nave in Wales. The ruins are rather melancholy and disappointing.
In 1282, Llywelyn the Last Prince of Wales (apart from Glyndŵr),was burried here after being killed and decapitated by the English. His head was taken to London where it was displayed on a pole to declare to all that it was England which would decide the fate of Wales from then on.
Living in the harshest conditions, the sisters never failed to impress with their welcoming warmth and their way to fry the local fish from the lake just aside their small house located at a mind boggling 4000 meters above the sealevel.

The Arctic Freeze is still upon us here in Groningen, the sky is fiercely blue and Sun is doing its very best. But still it's shivery weather.
To stretch my legs I walked out to the Noorderplantsoen. Thinking idly of the wealth of Stad in the early seventeenth century - when the City nearly doubled in size and invested heavily, too, in the battlements which later made way for the park - my eyes lit on these Catkins. Golden in the Sun, but Pale Cold Gold, though pretty indeed.
I didn't know that the word 'Catkin' was derived from the Dutch diminutive for cat: 'Katteken'. It was introduced into English by Henry Lyte (ca.1529-1607) in his translation (1578) of the botanical masterwork written by the great Rembert Dodoens (1517-1585). Curled up near my gas-fire, I had a great time leafing through my OED armed with a magnifying glass. Yes, I sometimes prefer books to 'on-line'...

Harvest Moon At 99% Waxing Gibbous

The "harvest moon" and "hunter's moon" are traditional terms for the full moons occurring during late summer and in the autumn, in the northern hemisphere usually in August, September and October respectively. The "harvest moon" is the full moon closest to the autumnal equinox (22 or 23 September), and the "hunter's moon" is the one following it. The names are recorded from the early 18th century. OED for "harvest moon" cites a 1706 reference, and for "hunter's moon" a 1710 edition of The British Apollo, where the term is attributed to "the country people" (The Country People call this the Hunters-Moon.) The names became traditional in American folklore, where they are now often popularly attributed to the Native Americans. The Feast of the Hunters' Moon is a yearly festival in West Lafayette, Indiana, held in late September or early October each year since 1968.[10] In 2010, the Harvest moon occurred on the night of equinox itself (some 51⁄2 hours after the point of equinox) for the first time since 1991.
All full moons rise around the time of sunset. Because the moon moves eastward among the stars faster than the sun its meridian passage is delayed, causing it to rise later each day on average by about 50.47 minutes. The harvest moon and hunter's moon are unique because the time difference between moonrises on successive evenings is much shorter than average. The moon rises approximately 30 minutes later from one night to the next, as seen from about 40 degrees N or S latitude. (This is because a full moon in September appears to move not straight east but north-east in the sky.) Thus, there is no long period of darkness between sunset and moonrise for several days following the actual date of the full moon.

On my way south to Limburg, I stopped by the Autumnal Old Hortus Botanicus of Utrecht to look at its delights (and to taste their coffee and very fresh apple pie).
My delight with these colorful Pokeweed Berries was second only to that of Curtis's Botanical Magazine of 1806 in a great understatement: 'By no means void of beauty'. Or Abraham Munting's (1583-1658) somewhat stern enthusiasm for this plant in his Groningen Hortus Botanicus: 'een schoon en beziens-waardig gewas' (a beautful plant worth seeing). Munting uses the Latin name by which it was then known, Blitum americanum. He also gives a Dutch synonym (found, too, in Dodonaeus): Meyer uyt America (why 'Meyer' or 'Maier' I have no idea. Someone?). Joseph Pitton de Tournefort (1656-1708) designated it as a 'Phytolacca'. The 'Poke' or 'Poake' is apparently cognate (according to the OED) with an Algonquin (native American) word for the plant, Apoke, Uppówoc, Puccoon, Poughkone and such; first used in English ca. 1612.
This Pokeberry was introduced from the Americas to Europe already in the sixteenth century and it was soon widely cultivated.
Sometimes its leaves were boiled like spinach, and an English encyclopedia of the early nineteenth century amusingly writes that it is 'said to have been used in Portugal to redden Portwine', but of course not in England. The idea alone... By 1800 Virginia Pokeweed was already naturalised in Spain, Portugal, Barbary, Zante and Greece: don't you just love those geographical designations! It's been used as a cure for cancer (around 1800).
The creamy white blossoms are pretty, but I prefer the exuberance of these Deep Purple Berries and their bright peduncles and pedicels.
Well, on what’s bound to be the sunniest day of spring - the weather goes completely 180 next week! - with a little free time on my side, today was the day to finish off the X46! And for my first run, after having put what I tried for in the first place, it’s deja-vu of when I went after the last EastRider in Market Weighton as, once again, I waited nearly half an hour in the middle of nowhere for a bus. Only this time, it was much warmer, and my main threat was an onslaught of ants. Going for the Morrisons hilltop approach seems to have worked really well for all the risk of missing the shot it carried. Hopefully, I'll be able to get a photo of these under the sun when I'm actually in York!
The first of three targeted East Yorkshire buses from the sunniest and warmest day so far of the year, East Yorkshire's 'EastRider X46'-branded 925, a 2020 ADL Enviro 400MMC, is seen here heading down the A164 on the last stretch of the X46 to Hull Interchange. Per allocations, this is the last double decker left to get at Anlaby Road depot!

Blaenavon is one of 29 UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Great Britain, three of which can be found in Wales.
The town came to prominence in the late 1700's with the opening of the Ironworks. The steel-making and coal mining industries soon followed, boosting the area's population to 20,000.
Sadly, the Ironworks closed in 1900 with the Coal Mine following 80 year's later. As a result, the town's population decreased to just over 6,000 and economic growth slowed. However, the mine is once more operational in the form of Big Pit National Coal Museum.
The X24 was upgraded to 'Gold' standard in November 2015. It is operated by 15 Cummins powered Enviro 300's allocated to Cwmbran depot.
Clive Arnold’s former Warrington Corporation Transport 112 OED 217, a Foden PVD6 built 1956 with an East Lancashire H30/28R body in Heaton Park in Manchester after taking part in the Trans-Lancs Transport Show. Sunday 2nd September 2018
Note, OED 217 was originally operated by Warrington Corporation as number 112, entering service on 25th March 1956. It was the last Foden front engined double deck vehicle to be produced and was withdrawn from service in autumn 1972 as the last Foden bus in municipal service. It was acquired for preservation for the Steamport Museum in Southport and then passed through several owners before being acquired its current owner

First appearance in print, in Latin in 1544 as "godwittam" which was eventually shortened to Godwit. The OED suggests that it comes from "God" and "wit" meaning to know. Another interpretation is that it comes from the Old English "god" meaning good and "wihte" meaning creature - it was good to eat, in fact Sir Thomas Browne wrote that the "Godwyt" was "the daintiest dish in England"

author Pip Williams has delved into the archives of the Oxford English Dictionary to tell this highly original story. The Dictionary of Lost Words is a delightful, lyrical, and deeply thought-provoking celebration of words and the power of language to shape the world.......
.....a Reese's Book Club selection, a bestseller NYTimes.....also available as a Kindle ebook and with Audible narration. I decided on the ebook alone, fighting the urge to add the audio version. The narrator has a pleasing British female voice but Amazon wants too much for adding the Audible narration for this title.
I like the ebook to read in bed with lights out to rest my eyes, using my small old iPad for its light weight.

Old English tigras (plural), also in part from Old French tigre "tiger" (mid-12c.), both from Latin tigris "tiger," from Greek tigris, possibly from an Iranian source akin to Old Persian tigra- "sharp, pointed," Avestan tighri- "arrow," in reference to its springing on its prey, "but no application of either word, or any derivative, to the tiger is known in Zend." [OED]. Of tiger-like persons from c. 1500. The meaning "shriek or howl at the end of a cheer" is recorded from 1845, American English, and is variously explained. Tiger's-eye "yellowish-brown quartz" is recorded from 1886.
