On April 22, we have the smallest full moon in the period March 05, 2015 - June 09, 2017 (apogee) ... it is the second smallest full moon of the next 10 years.
But on Nov. 14, 2016 we have the biggest full moon in the period of almost 87 years (between Jan. 26, 1948 and Nov. 25, 2034) ... It will shine with a 30 % larger surface as the full moon this night!!

Am 22. April (in der Nacht zum Freitag, um 01:15 Uhr) haben wir den kleinsten Vollmond im Zeitraum 05.04.2015 - 09.06.2017 (= Erdferne: Apogäum) ... es wird der zweitkleinste Vollmond der nächsten 10 Jahre. Der Abstand vom Erdmittelpunkt beträgt dann 406.355 Kilometer.
Aber: am 14.11.2016 haben wir den größten Vollmond im Zeitraum von knapp 87 Jahren (zwischen 26.01.1948 und 25.11.2034) ... Er wird dann mit einer 30% größeren Fläche leuchten als der Vollmond in dieser Nacht und einen Abstand von "nur" 356.523 Kilometer zum Erdmittelpunkt haben (Perigäum).

In the chilly wind and under a very bleak sun a carpet of small wildflowers decorate Our Lawn. Here are: Lawn Daisy, Bellis perennis; Early Forget-me-not, Myosotis ramosissima; Erodium circutarium, Redstem Filaree.
A query: I didn't know that Lawn Daisy also goes by the name 'Bairnwort'. It's obvious, of course, what that word means. But I couldn't find an etymology in the online OED. Can anyone 'Out There' enlighten me? E.g.: when it was first used. Thanks.
In the drabness of Winter these Chinese Lanterns in Shaffy's Garden. The plant doesn't hail from China but one can imagine why it's called Chinese Lantern Plant with reference to its fruits.
I tried to discover when that term was first used in English to describe our plant, but even the fine OED couldn't help out. Anyone out there in Flickrland know? Do tell me!

Our plant is called Wolf's Claw or Lycopus because its foliage resembles the claw of that beast. No! 'Horehound' is not a scurrilous wink at the Latin name. Indeed, 'hore' has to do with 'hoary' or 'white-haired' and 'hound' with the ancient name of a plant, says the grand old OED.
The tiny rosette flowers of Lycopus are very pretty, but this Flesh Fly probably doesn't care. It's after nutrients.

The great OED writes that 'Calamint' seems to be derived from the ancient Greek for 'beautiful mint', but concedes that this is 'perhaps only popular etymology'. The 'nepeta' is an ancient word for 'from Nepi', a town in Etruria, Italy, apparenly already used by Pliny.
Here are the pretty delicate lavender flowers in the Hortus Botanicus of Amsterdam. Their visitor is a Common Carder Bee, Bombus pascuorum.

En breton on l'appelle Ti ar Werc'hez (la Maison de la Vierge) comme le langage populaire dénommait les chapelles ayant la Vierge Marie pour patronne. La chapelle et son placître sont situés au pied des deux sommets du Ménez-Hom à une altitude de 193 mètres, au bord de la D 887, ancienne route nationale, important axe est-ouest qui fut longtemps l'axe principal d'accès à la presqu'île de Crozon.
Bei Linz Oed konnte ich die noch sehr saubere 1144 283 mit Pflatsch mit dem DG 54597 von Linz Vbf Ost nach Villach Süd bildlich festhalten. Auch die Sonne blinzelte für die Aufnahme kurz hinter den dichten Schleierwolken hervor.
Puuhh - das war richtig knapp - als der RCA Ekol 42511 auftauchte, war es noch "stockfinster", doch während sich der Zug näherte, schob der starke Wind die dunkle Wolke zur Seite. Wenn der Zug nur 3 Sekunden früher gekommen wäre, hätte das Bild nicht funktioniert. Manchmal muss man auch Glück haben ;-)
Mit einem Kieszug ist dieses Doppel am 7. August 2020 am Weg nach Linzerhaus und konnte bei Linz Oed abgelichtet werden.

'Filaree' is a form of 'alfilaria' which goes back on Spanish and Arabic; it refers to the 'pin-like' seed capsules of our plant. The on-line OED doesn't give 'Filaree'; you'll have to go to other dictionaries or botanical handbooks to follow that word up.
At this time of the year there are no insects to be enticed by the pretty flower spots on the lower petals.

Aktuell ist die Südbahn zwischen Wiener Neustadt und Mürzzuschlag gesperrt weswegen ein Großteil des Zugverkehrs über die Pyhrnbahn, Tauernbahn und das Gesäuse umgeleitet wird. Bis 28. Mai können auf eben genannten Bahnstrecken noch einige interessante Umleiterzüge beobachtet werden. Am 24. Mai war die 1142 665 mit dem SDG 55613 von Wien Zvbf nach Zeltweg unterwegs. Bei Linz Oed lag der gemischte Güterzug mit der noch mit großen Scheinwerfern und Pflatsch versehenen 1142er gerade noch so akzeptabel im Licht.

It appears that Robert Vaughan (1592 ?-1666) was born at y Wengraig, seen here.
When he was 20 years old he went to Oxford to study, and later he lived at Hengwrt, near Dolgellau.
At Hengwrt he made a notable collection of manuscripts, of great significance for the Welsh language.
Lovely to see a pair of these fantastic birds back in one of my favourite wildlife spots.

Unterwegs in der Sächsischen Schweiz am Dreisteigensteig zwischen Großen Pohlshorn und Zeughaus.
Immer wieder trifft man in der Hinteren Sächsischen Schweiz auf Waldabschnitte, die Borkenkäfer, Trockenheit und Sturmschäden schwer mitgenommen haben. Einzelne Flächen hat der Sachsenforst bereits beräumt, anderswo ragen die Restgerippe aber noch in den Himmel empor.
Fast könnte man meinen, dass die Natur einen Plan verfolgt - denn nach den trockenen Vorjahren war die Angst vor Waldbränden in den Borkenkäferbeständen nicht unbegründet. Und prompt zeigte sich der Sommer 2021 als überaus nass und verregnet. Und so täuscht das Endzeitmotiv darüber hinweg, dass im Unterholz das frische junge Grüne schon fleißig am Nachwachsen ist. Wachsen und Vergehen...der Kreislauf der Natur.
Der Dreisteigensteig ist übrigens einer der ältesten Wege in diesem Teil des Elbsandsteingebirges. Er ist schon auf den um 1600 entstandenen Karten der Ersten Kursächsischen Landesaufnahme des Vermessers Matthias Oeder verzeichnet. Auf den Meilenblättern aus der Zeit um 1780 ist er noch als "die drey stege" bezeichnet, was sich auf die Brücke über die Kirnitzsch bezieht, die man auf dem Weg von Hinterhermsdorf in Richtung Zschand, Zeughaus und weiter zum Großen Winterberg zwangsläufig überqueren muss.

Den Boschzug aus Hegyeshalom brachten heute Lokomotion 193 773 "150 Jahre Brennereisenbahn" und 193 664 an sein Ziel München Nord. Dank Verspätung lag der Zug bei Linz Oed auf der Trauner Schleife noch gut im Licht und konnte vor der herannahenden Schlechtwetterfront noch schön sonnig abgelichtet werden.
Am 28. Mai waren 1216 931 und 1216 932 mit dem GAG 47211 unterwegs. Bei Linz Oed gelang ein Bild des Zuges.
It's a rather boring name, is Umbrella Plant. But 'Indian Rhubarb' might cause confusion, conflating it with Rheum webbianum, which indeed hails from the Indian subcontinent. The 'Indian' in the common name of our plant refers to Native Americans. As far as I can trace it, that name goes back to at least 1697 when a description of its gum was given by one Martin Lister (see OED). The plant was first described in 1849 under the scientific name 'Saxifraga peltata'. In 1899 it was given the current moniker 'Darmera peltata'. It hails from western North America where it was first collected by Karl Theodor Hartweg (1812-1871) near Sacramento in 1839. 'Darmera' is for Karl Darmer (1843-1918), indefatigable horticulturalst of Berlin, Germany.

Am 8. Mai war die Railpool 185 681 mit einem Kesselwagenzug über die Trauner Schleife unterwegs. Bei Linz Oed gelang ein Bild des Zuges.

Palestinian doctors have reported infants freezing to death in displacement camps. Just the other day, Gaza's Ministry of Health confirmed a two-week-old infant succumbed to the cold and wet. The science is simple: malnourished bodies, already depleted of fat and muscle, cannot generate the heat needed to survive this cold and damp. The UN warns the risk of hypothermia is 'heightened', with babies in 'very high danger'. This is of course all well known, predictable, and entirely preventable but not whilst Israel controls the area..

Nur sehr selten kommen die schicken Alpha Vectrons von TX Logistik auf der Donauachse zum Einsatz – deswegen umso erfreulicher, dass 193 558 mit der Aufschrift „Natural Talent“ Anfang Juli dem Osten Österreichs wiedermal einen Besuch abstattete. Mit dem TEC 43946 von Wien nach Wanne-Eickel konnte besagte Lok bei Linz Oed auf der Trauner Schleife fotografiert werden.

The UK government has promised new legislation to crack down on repeated demonstrations, in a move widely seen as targeting pro-Palestine protesters. Under the proposed laws, police would be given powers to force demonstrators to change location if they are deemed responsible for "repeated disorder." "A government facilitating genocide wants to ban protests against genocide. This is shameless opportunism by Israel's apologists.
