Introduction

In January 2004, Santiago Calatrava presented its design for the World Trade Center Transportation Center.

One of the first decisions that Calatrava had in mind at the time of conceiving the project was the realization of the building at street level, an independent structure along the Wedge of Light Square, by Daniel Libeskind. “Oculus”, the centerpiece of the Transportation Center that presents the new station to the world is a kind of pause in the middle of the dense glass and steel towers that surround it.

The construction, due to constant delays, lasted 12 years and was finally inaugurated on March 3, 2016, without too many celebrations. The cost of its construction, $ 4 billion, greatly exceeded its original cost, becoming, until the time of its inauguration, the most expensive train station in the world and the third largest transportation center in New York, after Grand Central and Penn Station, both in Midtown Manhattan.

In its early stages, construction was delayed due to disputes over cost, safety and design. In 2012, the site was flooded by Hurricane Sandy and millions of liters of water had to be pumped in a matter of days. Other events were even more unexpected, such as the discovery of the remains of an 18th century ship.

An iPhone photo that I took recently during a visit to Santiago Calatrava’s Oculus building in Manhattan, NYC.

Sunlight from the oculus, the open circle at the top of the oldest complete and unsupported concrete dome in the world, kissing the ceiling of the structure. The Pantheon in Rome, Italy, was built almost 2000 years ago.

Above Fulton Center (New York city's newest newest transit hub) sits this steel fabric "sky reflector net" which reflects and disperses natural lighting into the subway station below it.

Billed by MTA officials as "New York's Next Greatest Public Space", the Fulton Building is designed with a strong focus on retail with the Oculus serving as a major focal point.

A concatedral or co-cathedral is a cathedral church which shares the function of being a bishop's seat, or "cathedra", with another cathedral. Ta, very much Wikipedia.

Symmetry can be tricky here

The $4 billion Oculus station house, designed by the Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava, consists of white ribs that interlock high above the ground. The interior of the station house contains two underground floors, which house part of the Westfield World Trade Center mall. The transportation hub connects the various modes of transportation in Lower Manhattan, from the Fulton Center in the east to the Battery Park City Ferry Terminal in the west, and includes connections to various New York City Subway stations. It is the fifth-busiest transportation hub in the New York metropolitan area.
