Hirtle Beach / Kingsburg , Nova Scotia

at Beach Acres, Parksville, BC

Picture made at the island Madeira with Leica iiic from 1948-1949.

Lens: Summaron 3.5/35mm.

Film: Ilford FP4@125.

Exposure was about 10 seconds.

Developed with Jobo Alpha B&W developer, 9 minutes@22C (rotation-development).

Again, I'm drawn to views that already have a 'frame' (like on my last visit to the building site in Shoreham). Maybe I'm just letting the buildings I visit do the work for me, but I'm always keen to show the world as it is - if you were standing where I was, this is exactly what you would have been looking at.

Maybe I'm overthinking it.

Ah, the derelict building site on the Isle of Portland again. This time, rather than for an adventure, Michael and I were taking the first of my final degree series photographs.

Whereas last time we were able to just step into the site.... this time wasn't as simple. It seemed like the only way would be through some incredibly overgrown trees. Half an hour of slow, painful (the nettles! THE NETTLES!) crawling later and we had made virtually no progress. When we did finally exit the trees, we were too high above ground level to drop down. That meant going all the way back the way we came. It was becoming clear that we wouldn't manage.

Let's just say that, after a long time of trying with some literal tip-toeing past a security guy on his tablet... we got in. This was the first shot I felt comfortable taking after we got out-of-sight of anyone.

Some birds hang out under the overcast sky.

One of the beautiful days walking with Willow high above the beach.

There is a very salient poit south of Diano Marina on the italian Riviera, called Cap Landen.

"Waimea Bay has a lot of history. It's known to be one of the first places where guys ventured out in the 50's and rode giant waves. Banzai Pipeline is a remarkable spot. For spectators it's probably on the better spots to watch surfing. It is a dangerous place, so it's for experts only. Sunset Beach is my favorite spot, actually. It's where I learned to ride big waves."

Some days it just feels right.

The Holiday Train makes its way south towards Indian on a cold and cloudy day. This neighborhood is rather unique as these house have an airstrip in their back yard. If one looks closely through the bushes on the left you can see two small planes stored for the winter.

-- Advice from the Ocean --

‧ Be shore of yourself.

‧ Come out of your shell.

‧ Take time to coast.

‧ Avoid pier pressure.

‧ Sea life’s beauty.

‧ Don’t get so tide down on work that you miss out on life’s beautiful waves.

Three bracketed photos were taken with a handheld Nikon D7200 and combined with Photomatix Pro to create this HDR image. Additional adjustments were made in Photoshop CS6.

It's no secret how much I love the sea. I dream about walks along the seashore, finding beautiful shells, and smelling the ocean air. Just the thought calms and relaxes me. Reality is I can't walk the seashore every day, so I've brought the sea to me. Seashells adorn my desk and I can escape from the pressures of life and dream a little dream every day. How about you? What is your relaxation and love? Gardening? Flying? Mountain climbing? If you can't go to it, then bring a little bit of it to you and dream a little dream with me!
