Twenty years ago i was accepted into the College of Art and Science at Bowling Green State University. As excited as I was, over a span of 4 months leading up to my travels there I had strange nightly dreams! Each night i dreamed that I packed my belongings and set out to school with each and every person I had ever known in my life...hundreds of faces swam before me in each dream...and each location was different, Italy, Mexico, my grandfather's farmland! But each dream left me feeling lost and desperate...unsettled!

The final dream I had was the night before my departure......i was wearing a long, white cotton dress that blew in the breeze. Everyone was in may backyard as i opened the door and stepped outside. The grass was greener than any grass i had ever seen. On the picnic table was a bowl of deep red apples....everyone smiled and waved at me as a I walked past....alone....toward the back split rail fence and the golden wheat field beyond! Slow motion crept over me and I was consumed with dread!

As i approached the garage on the right I stopped breathing......I set my eyes to the back fence....but as I passed the garage there was a man standing there....i could see him in the corner of my eye! And as I placed my hand on the fence rail and began to climb over....his hand took hold of my shoulder......

And that is when I woke up!

The news came the very next morning.....family circumstances rendered me unable to go to Bowling Green! I was bitter about it, letting it define my life for a few years, blaming others...the dream and the clarity of it still haunt me today.....

But I NOW know that each and every one of my obstacles in life are totally imposed by me.....

Macro Mondays ~ July 11 ~ Challenge: Obstacles

I thought of many things that are obstacles for people.......weight, money, greed, power, etc. I had a few in mind for my photograph but kept coming back to this. This has been an obstacle all my life. If you have never had a family member with this problem you may not recognize it as a disease but it is. It is not just a "choice" that affects only the life of the alcoholic. It is an obstacle for the alcoholic's loved ones in all aspects of their lives.....their marriages, friendships, jobs and relationships. I still go back and look at how it affected my relationship with my mother while she was alive.....it still affects me today.

Although he is known by many other attributes, Ganesha's elephant head makes him particularly easy to identify. In Hinduism, Ganesha is widely revered as the Remover of Obstacles. and more generally as the Lord of Beginnings and the Lord of Obstacles, patron of arts and sciences, and the deva of intellect and wisdom. He is honoured at the beginning of rituals and ceremonies and invoked as the Patron of Letters during writing sessions.Several texts relate mythological anecdotes associated with his birth and exploits and explain his distinct iconography.

The most well-known story is probably the one taken from the Shiva Purana. Once, while his mother Parvati wanted to take a bath, there were no attendants around to guard her and stop anyone from accidentally entering the house. Hence she created an image of a boy out of turmeric paste which she prepared to cleanse her body (turmeric was used for its antiseptic and cooling properties), and infused life into it, and thus Ganesha was born. Parvati ordered Ganesha not to allow anyone to enter the house, and Ganesha obediently followed his mother's orders. After a while Shiva returned from outside, and as he tried to enter the house, Ganesha stopped him. Shiva was infuriated at this strange little boy who dared to challenge him. He told Ganesha that he was Parvati's husband, and demanded that Ganesha let him go in. But Ganesha would not hear any person's word other than his dear mother's. Shiva lost his patience and had a fierce battle with Ganesha. At last he severed Ganesha's head with his trishula. When Parvati came out and saw her son's lifeless body, she was very angry and sad. She demanded that Shiva restore Ganesha's life at once.

Unfortunately, Shiva's trishula was so powerful that it had hurled Ganesha's head very far off. All attempts to find the head were in vain. Parvati was so enraged and insulted that she decided to destroy the entire Creation! Lord Brahma, being the Creator, naturally had his issues with this, and pleaded that she reconsider her drastic plan. She said she would, but only if two conditions were met: one, that Ganesha be brought back to life, and two, that he be forever worshipped before all the other gods. Sent Brahma out with orders to bring back the head of the first creature he crosses that is laying with its head facing North. Shiva then sent his celestial armies (Gana) to find and take the head of whatever creature they happened to find asleep with its head facing north. They found a dying elephant which slept in this manner, and after its death took its head, attaching the elephant's head to Ganesha's body and bringing him back to life. From then on, he was called Ganapathi, head of the celestial armies, and was to be worshipped by everyone before beginning any activity.

Something totally different this morning. We paid a visit to the National Carriage Driving championships @ Sandringham. a few representative photos. Have not been for about 12-15 years. No water splash obstacle this year unfortunately as that gives the best photos usually. A 3 day event with the 2nd day (today) being a "marathon", about 8km drive on roads & parkland leading to 8 obstacle course's that are timed with a short breating drive between each one. This was once the favorite sport of the Duke of Edinborough.
