I observed about 400 of these at the Lyseng Reservoire near Camrose. According to Sibley, a flock of Long-billed Dowitchers give a constant soft chatter while feeding. Feeding Short-billed Dowitchers are silent. The groups I observed were vocal while feeding.

Long-billed Dowitchers feed and fly in tight groups. The second photo in the comment box illustrates this.

The bill size is not a reliable field mark. Only the extremes of either case is useful. According to the Atlas of Breeding Birds of Alberta, if a Dowitcher has extensive white on the belly, no bar on the sides of the breast and a short to moderate bill, it is most likely a Short-billed Dowitcher. The two species will flock togther during migration.

Long-billed Dowitchers nest in northeast Siberia, northwest Alaska, and the Mackenzie district and northern Yukon. We see them here in May and again in September and October.

Short-billed Dowitchers breed in central and northern Alberta.

I have added some photos of White-fronted Geese and Snow Geese taken while I was out with Glenn

Parker and Bob van Essen. We saw thousands of these birds. There was no way to get close for really sharp shots, but I think our photos give an idea of the numbers we saw.

The spiral galaxy UGC 11860 seems to float serenely against a field of background galaxies in this image from the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope. UGC 11860 lies around 184 million light-years away in the constellation Pegasus, and its untroubled appearance is deceiving; this galaxy recently played host to an almost unimaginably energetic stellar explosion.

A supernova explosion – the catastrophically violent end of a massive star’s life – was detected in UGC 11860 in 2014. Astronomers used Hubble’s Wide Field Camera 3 to search through the aftermath and analyze the lingering remnants of this vast cosmic explosion.

One team explored UGC 11860 to understand more about the star systems that eventually meet their demise in supernovae. The hugely energetic processes during supernova explosions are predominantly responsible for forging the elements between silicon and nickel on the periodic table. This means that understanding the influence of the masses and compositions of the progenitor star systems is vital to explaining how many of the chemical elements here on Earth originated.

Ex-LMSR 'Jubilee' No. 45699 'Galatea' restarts a charter working from a signal check on the last leg of it's journey into Shrewsbury station. The train is West Coast Railway Company's 1Z49 0552 Cleethorpes - Shrewsbury on 5th October 2013 which operated diesel-hauled to Crewe where 'Galatea' then took over for the remainder of the journey, working via Chester and Wrexham General. Many heads hang out of carriage windows to check progress, as the locomotive approaches the complex point work on the approach to the station. He observes and executes...in his own way. : ) (Love the soundtrack from the scene.)

Christmas in the Countryside...

There will not be a long time, when few birds find food, before there are many.

Observed this out my bedroom window this morning while getting ready for the day.

Observed this one feverishly inspecting the tree for its next snack. It was constantly in motion, but I finally managed to get a photo where it was still for a split-second. Taken at Fort Abraham Lincoln near Bismarck ND.

Observed at the community gardens at Shelby Farms, Memphis, Tn.

im not sure if kane helped on this or not, i heard he did.

#WorldFoodDay #ArtGriculture

A fertile area in a desert region, by the Amu Darya river. Rivers bring water, and water brings life and food. 🌾🐐🌱🐄If there is one thing I have noticed this mission it is that agriculture and pastures come in all shapes and sizes, maybe being @FAO good-will ambassador made me more aware of the #CropArt in the 🌍🌏🌎. It is logical because humans all over the world need food security, and throughout our changing landscapes the need to grow food doesn't change. Crop fields and pastures come in many shapes and sizes: round, square, in-between and landscape-changing or river-diverting, and in deserts. As our climate changes we need to adapt and farm differently as necessary to ensure healthy food for all.
