This plant had formerly a great reputation as a vulnerary, being strongly recommended by Gerard in his Herbal. He tells us that once being in Kent, visiting a patient, he accidentally heard of a countryman who had cut himself severely with a scythe, and had bound a quantity of this herb, bruised with grease and 'laid upon in manner of a poultice' over the wound, which healed in a week, though it would 'have required forty daies with balsam itself.' Gerard continues:

'I saw the wound and offered to heal the same for charietie, which he refused, saying I could not heal it so well as himself - a clownish answer, I confesse, without any thanks for my good-will: whereupon I have named it "Clown's Woundwort."

Gerard himself, according to his own account, afterwards 'cured many grievous wounds, and some mortale with the same herbe.' The plant was regarded as a valuable remedy in such cases long before Gerard's time, having long borne the names, among country people, All-heal and Woundwort. The Welsh have an ancient name for it bearing the same signification.

It has edible roots. These are tuberous and attain a considerable size; when boiled they form a wholesome and nutritious food, rather agreeable in flavour. The young shoots may likewise be eaten cooked like Asparagus, but though pleasant in taste they have a disagreeable smell.

In modern herbal medicine this plant (which is collected in July, when just coming into flower and dried in the same manner as Wood Betony is employed for its antiseptic and antispasmodic properties. It relieves gout, cramp and pains in the joints and vertigo. The bruised leaves, which have an unpleasant odour and an astringent taste, when applied to a wound will stop bleeding and heal the wound, as is claimed for them by old tradition, and the fresh juice is made into a syrup and taken internally to stop haemorrhages, dysentery, etc.

Common crossbills have one of the most protracted breeding seasons of any British bird. It can begin as early as January and, in parts of their range, they have been recorded breeding in every month of the year. Up to four greenish-white, lightly-blotched eggs are laid, and incubated solely by the female. After 13 days, the eggs hatch and both parents take part in feeding duties. Like many other seed-eating birds, the chicks are fed on insects initially, as these are highly nutritious.

I went to the forest of Dean yesterday, in the hope of seeing these stunning birds. A six hour round trip.

The Moringa tree is widely cultivated for its nutritious edible parts. Moringa leaves, pods and seeds have more vitamin C than oranges as well as high amounts of calcium, potassium, iron, zinc and more. They're also high in antioxidants. The leaves were used to flavor our meal at the organic farm. Maybe that's what made it so incredibly delicious.

Apparently, Castro promoted wide planting of this tree in Cuba.

The Yellow-shafted Northern Flicker resides in eastern North America while the Red-shafted Flicker resides in the western part. Yellow-shafted Flickers are yellow under the tail and underwings, and have yellow shafts on their primaries where as with the Red-shafted it's red. Both species have a grey cap, a beige face and a red chevron shaped bar at the nape of their neck. Yellow-shafted males have a black moustache while the Red-shafted's moustache is red. Females of both species look essentially the same as the male except they lack the moustache and are typically slightly smaller in size.

Flickers are a medium to large sized woodpecker, measuring 11 - 14 inches (28 - 36 cm) in length with a 17 - 21 inch (42 - 54 cm) wingspan.

Northern Flickers are the only woodpecker that frequently feeds on the ground, probing with their beak, it also sometimes catches insects in flight. Although they eat fruits, berries, seeds and nuts, their primary food is insects. Ants alone can make up 45% of their diet. Flickers often go after ants underground (where the nutritious larvae live), hammering at the soil the way other woodpeckers drill into wood. Their tongues can dart out 2 inches beyond the end of the bill to snare prey. As well as eating ants, flickers have a behavior called "anting", during which they use the acid from the ants to assist in preening, as it is useful in keeping them free of parasites.

Flickers may be observed in open habitats near trees, including woodlands, edges, yards, and parks. Northern birds sometimes migrate to the southern parts of their range; southern birds are often permanent residents.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopediaThe Warthog or Common Warthog (Phacochoerus africanus, "African Lens-Pig") is a wild member of the pig family that lives in Africa.

The common name comes from the four large wart-like protrusions found on the head of the warthog, which serve the purpose of defense when males fight. They are the only widely recognised species in their genus, though some authors divide them into two species. On that classification, P. africanus is the Common (or Northern) Warthog and P. aethiopicus is the Desert Warthog, also known as the Cape or Somali Warthog.

Description ~

Warthogs range in size from 0.91 to 1.5 metres (3.0 to 4.9 ft) in length and 50 to 150 kg (110 to 330 lb) in weight. A warthog is identifiable by the two pairs of tusks protruding from the mouth, which are used as weapons against predators. The upper canine teeth can grow to 9 inches (22.86 cm), and are of a squashed circle shape in cross section, almost rectangular, being about 1+3⁄4 in (4.4 cm) deep and 1 in (2.5 cm) wide. The tusk will curve 90 degrees or more from the root,[citation needed] and the tusk will not lie flat on a table, as it curves somewhat backwards as it grows. The tusks are used for digging, for combat with other hogs, and in defence against predators—the lower set can inflict severe wounds.

Warthog ivory is taken from the constantly growing canine teeth. Each warthog has a pair of teeth in each jaw with the lower teeth being far shorter than the upper teeth. Both pairs grow upwards, with the upper teeth being by far the more spectacular in appearance. The lower pair, however, are the more dangerous: the teeth are straight, sharply pointed, and keep a keen edge by the upper pair rubbing against the lower pair. The tusks, more often the upper set, are worked much in the way of elephant tusks with all designs scaled down. Tusks are carved predominantly for the tourist trade in East and Southern Africa.

The male is called a boar, the female a sow, and the young piglets. A group is called a sounder.

Ecology ~

Although warthogs are commonly seen in (and associated with) open grasslands, they will seek shelter and forage in denser vegetation. In fact, warthogs prefer to forage in dense, moist areas when available.[citation needed] The common warthog diet is omnivorous, composed of grasses, roots, berries and other fruits, bark, fungi, eggs, dead animals, and even small mammals, reptiles and birds. The diet is seasonably variable, depending on availability of different food items. Areas with many bulbs, rhizomes and nutritious roots can support large numbers of warthogs. Warthogs are powerful diggers, using both heads and feet. When feeding, they often bend the front legs backwards and move around staying on the knees. Although they can dig their own burrows, they commonly occupy abandoned burrows of aardvarks or other animals. The warthog commonly enters burrows "back-end first", with the head always facing the opening and ready to burst out as needed.

Warthogs are fast runners and quite capable jumpers. They will often run with their tails in the air. Despite poor eyesight, warthogs have a good sense of smell, which they use for locating food, detecting predators and recognizing other animals.

Although capable of fighting, with males aggressively fighting each other during mating season, a primary defense is to flee by means of fast sprinting. The main warthog predators are humans, lions, leopards, crocodiles, and hyenas. Cheetahs are also capable of catching small warthogs. However, if a female warthog has any piglets to defend she'll defend them very aggressively. It had been reported that warthogs have given lions deep, serious, deadly wounds, which sometimes end with the lion bleeding to death.

Warthogs have been observed allowing banded mongooses to groom them to remove ticks.

Mei is such a good mother. Qi Ji sure does love his milkies, nice comfort & love, and nutritious, too.

I love wheat grass. I grow it and snip off a bit to put in my fruit smoothies. It might sound odd to some (as it did to me at first), but it's sweet and loaded with nutrients. It's fun to grow this over the winter, as it brings a bit of summertime into the house.

Here's some info on wheat grass:

~Wheatgrass is the young wheat plant. It is 70% chlorophyll in its juice form.

~The high chlorophyll content of wheatgrass acts as a "magnet" in drawing out toxins from the body.

~Chlorophyll has been shown to produce an unfavorable environment for bacterial growth in the body and therefore effective in increasing the body's resistance to illness.

~Wheatgrass has more vitamin C than oranges and twice the vitamin A as carrots. It is also rich in vitamins E, K, and B-complex.

Here's my favorite 'Green Smoothie' recipe:

* 1 cup green grapes

* 1/2 cup fresh pineapple

* 1/2 cup wheat grass

* 1 cup ice

Tall Bluestem Grass is indigenous to Kansas. It is very nutritious for cattle and many are shipped to the Flints Hills region during warm months to fatten. This was the staple of the great herds of buffalo. The plains Indians knew the grass responded well to burning and often set immense fires so buffalo would have access to the grass. The plants upper portions shoots up in late summer carrying seeds. The stems can reach a height of 6-7 feet!

Puriri fruit lying on the ground under the tree.

Pūriri fruit is not the most nutritious sort in the New Zealand bush (high in carbohydrates, not lipids, sugars or calcium), but it is always there. The nut (endocarp) inside the drupe is a very hard pear-shaped kernel[3] that can contain up to 4 seeds. The seedlings from one kernel can germinate at the same time or be spread over a year.

Pūriri is an invaluable food source for native wildlife, as it provides both fruit and nectar in seasons when few other species produce these (Info from Wikipedia)

Purple Potatoes

Most of us are used to seeing and eating the typical white or yellow fleshed potatoes.

You may even eat sweet potatoes on a regular basis and so you might be accustomed to orange as well.

Native to South America, purple potatoes got their name due to their deep purple skin and flesh.

There are several types of the purple potato including the Purple Majesty, Purple Viking and Purple Peruvian varieties.

It has a slightly nutty flavor and a creamier texture when compared to traditional potatoes. This makes it ideal for baking, mashing, pan frying and doing pretty much anything else that you might do with a standard potato. It can be delicious when blended with various herbs and garlic and makes a great mashed potato dish since it has a creamier texture when cooked.

Purple potatoes are inherently dry, starchy, earthy and slightly nutty in flavor.

Researchers shed light on the ability of purple potatoes to help lower High Blood Pressure.

Scientists have found that just a couple servings of potatoes a day reduces blood pressure almost as much as oatmeal without causing weight gain.
