Nugget Point, Catlins, New Zealand South Island. 4 January 2008.

These steeps slopes stand firm against the waves.

Photos taken while on a 7 day road trip around the lower part of the South Island of New Zealand, details on my blog: samsplayground.com/places-to-visit-in-the-lower-south-isl...

Royal Spoonbill (Kotuku Kutupapa):

When tides are high silky white Kotuku Kutupapa perch sheltered and protected on the rock nugget pictured. Shy and graceful, they fly with the tide to spoon their bills in shallow Catlins estuaries (hence the name 'Spoonbill')

Witnessed this at Roaring Bay, Catlins. A New Zealand Sealion killing and eating a New Zealand Fur Seal pup. Quite disturbing but facinating to watch at the same time

New Zealand, South Island

Lighthouse on Nugget Point. It is located in the Catlins area on the Southern Coast of New Zealand, Otago region. The Lighthouse is surrounded by small rock islands, nuggets

A quite remote and very beautiful spot in southern Otago on the northern end of the Catlin's Coast

Rocky islets form Nugget Point at sunrise along the Otago Coast on the South Island of New Zealand.

The Caitlins Wilderness Area runs along the SE coast of the South Island, made up of remote and windy rolling grasslands. Nugget Point lighthouse points out into the ocean. Built in 1870, it's surrounded by a large fur seal colony. The 'Nuggets' are those craggy boulders in the sea to the right of the lighthouse.

Penguins stagger up the beach after a day at sea.
