The reindeer have a large area to play with brushes and other objects that are decorated with Christmas themes.
On the Emirates flight from Dubai to Seattle, we flew over the beautiful landscape of the North Pole. Mostly I just stared but I had to take few shots!
Li avevamo cercati in lungo ed in largo nel corso di tutta la spedizione ma per un motivo o per un'altro (tempo pessimo per uscire in mare con i gommoni, banchisa troppo spessa da rompere, ecc..) non eravamo mai riusciti a trovarli, poi proprio all'ultima occasione, tornando verso sud, abbiamo avvistato una bella colonia intenta a godersi il proprio bagno di sole. Felici per la scoperta abbiamo subito messo in acqua gli zodiac e siamo sbarcati a qualche centinaio di metri di distanza, ben coperti da degli alti scogli; Sapevamo bene che si trattava di animali piuttosto diffidenti e che la loro distanza di fuga era piuttosto ampia, per cui muovendoci a carponi prima e strisciando poi, siamo arrivati a circa 150 m dalla colonia e li ci siamo appostati sperando di non disturbare troppo gli animali.
Eravamo da poco arrivati quando è accaduta una cosa davvero insolita che si verifica molto di rado in natura: i grandi maschi della colonia hanno cominciato ad osservarci sempre più insistentemente ed alla fine incuriositi si sono gettati in acqua e si sono avvicinati a noi a non più di 10 metri; sono rimasti per un pò al sicuro in acqua ad osservarci, poi capito che non rappresentavamo un pericolo, hanno ripreso le loro attività abituali di pulizia, caccia e gioco proprio davanti a noi.. E' difficile spiegare a parole le emozioni provate, ma vedere questi giganti gentili cacciare e giocare in acqua a pochi metri da me, è stata un'esperienza da togliere il fiato! Per darvi un'idea dell'unicità del momento, il ranger che ci accompagnava per proteggerci da eventuali attacchi dell'orso bianco, un vero veterano dei ghiacci si è commosso per l'accaduto e ci ha ringraziato per avergli "regalato" un'emozione simile !

We had looked for them far and wide throughout the expedition but for one reason or another (bad time to go out to sea with zodiacs, icepack too heavy to break, etc ..) we were never able to find them, but on the last chance, sailing to the south, we saw a beautiful colony intent to enjoy their sun bath. Happy for the discovery we immediately put in the water the zodiacs and we landed a few hundred meters away, well covered by high cliffs; We knew that they was wary animals, so moving on all fours before and crawling then, we get to 150 m from the colony, here we posted hoping not to disturb the animals.
We had just arrived when it happened something really unusual that occurs very rarely in nature: the big males of the colony began to look toward us more and more insistently, and then getting curious, they moved toward us stopping about 10 meters from us; they stayed for a while safe in the water observing, then when they realized that we were not a danger, they have resumed their usual activities of cleaning, hunting and playing right in front of us.. It 'hard to explain in words my emotions, see these gentle giants hunting and playing in the water a few meters from me, was a breathtaking experience! To give you an idea of the uniqueness of the moment, the ranger who escorted us to protect us from the polar bears attacks, a true veteran of the arctic, was moved and thanked us for having given to him an emotion like that!
