Wandiligong is a town in north-eastern Victoria in the alpine region around 330 kilometres from Melbourne. Established in the 1850s as part of the Victorian Gold Rush, Wandiligong became a hub for many gold miners, including a large Chinese community. At its peak, the town was home to over two thousand inhabitants and boasted shops, churches, a public library, halls and even an hotel. Much has changed since those heady days of the gold rush, and the picturesque town nestled in a valley and built around the Morses Creek, is now a sleepy little town full of picturesque houses which are often let to visitors to the area. The whole town is registered with the National Trust of Australia for its historic landscape and buildings of historic value.

Port Au Choix is about half way up the Viking Trail on the north eastern peninsula of Newfoundland. It’s home to a small herd of Caribou, usually seen around the lighthouse, but often in town as well.

Located near Tollesboro, this huge house sits a long way from any road. The beautiful rolling hills of the Knobs of Eastern Kentucky are in the background.

One evening when the light burst through the clouds the contrast was strong through the clouds so I have included more sky than landscape.

As the contrast was so strong I thought a mono version might be a way to go, not to everyone`s taste but it`s so different in mono .

Bow Fiddle Rock is a natural sea arch near Portknockie on the north-eastern coast of Scotland. It is so called because it resembles the tip of a fiddle bow. It is composed of Quartzite, a metamorphic rock which was originally quartz sandstone.

This rock is part of the Cullen Quartzite formation which is seen along the coast between Buckie and Cullen. The formation is some 2,400m thick and dates from the Neoproterozoic Era, 1,000 to 541 million years ago.

The common bulbul (Pycnonotus barbatus) is a member of the bulbul family of passerine birds. It is found in north-eastern, northern, western and central Africa.

The bill is fairly short and thin, with a slightly down curving upper mandible. The bill, legs, and feet are black and the eye is dark brown with a dark eye-ring, which is not readily visible. It is about 18 cm in length, with a long tail. It has a dark brown head and upperparts. Sexes are similar in plumage.

It is a common resident breeder in much of Africa, and it has recently been found breeding in southern Spain at Tarifa. It is found in woodland, coastal bush, forest edges, riverine bush, montane scrub, and in mixed farming habitats. It is also found in exotic thickets, gardens, and parks.

The common bulbul is usually seen in pairs or small groups. It is a conspicuous bird, which tends to sit at the top of a bush. As with other bulbuls they are active and noisy birds. The flight is bouncing and woodpecker-like. The call is a loud doctor-quick doctor-quick be-quick be-quick. - Wikipedia

A village in Menchukha valley in the north-eastern state of Arunachal Pradesh, India.

I have posted this photo earlier but many new friends have joned me since then and I wanted to share this with them.:-)

Menchukha is a very remote and picturesque valley situated at around 6000 feet above sea level in the state of Arunachal Pradesh in north-east India. The Yargyapchu River flows through this serene and beautiful valley. The name Menchukha means "medicinal water of snow" Men - medicine ,chu - water and kha - snow. The valley is home to the Adi and Memba tribes and the population is mainly Buddhist.

We spent a couple of days here sometime in November 2019 and most of the time the sky was overcast. This is a very remote area and involves two days travel over very bad roads from the nearest airport so it is still (thankfully) relatively untouched.

King's Cross railway station, also known as London King's Cross, is a passenger railway terminus in the London Borough of Camden, on the edge of Central London. It is in the London station group, one of the busiest stations in the United Kingdom

The station was opened in Kings Cross in 1852 by the Great Northern Railway on the northern edge of Central London to accommodate the East Coast Main Line. It quickly grew to cater to suburban lines and was expanded several times in the 19th century. It came under the ownership of the London and North Eastern Railway as part of the Big Four grouping in 1923, who introduced famous services such as the Flying Scotsman and locomotives such as Mallard. The station complex was redeveloped in the 1970s, simplifying the layout and providing electric suburban services, and it became a major terminus for the high-speed InterCity 125. As of 2018, long-distance trains from King's Cross are run by London North Eastern Railway to Edinburgh Waverley, Leeds and Newcastle; other long-distance operators include Hull Trains and Grand Central

In the late 20th century, the area around the station became known for its seedy and downmarket character, and was used as a backdrop for several films as a result. A major redevelopment was undertaken in the 21st century, including restoration of the original roof, and the station became well known for its association with the Harry Potter books and films, particularly the fictional Platform 9+3⁄4.

Berwick-upon-Tweed is a railway station on the East Coast Main Line, which runs between London King's Cross and Edinburgh Waverley. The station, situated 67 miles (108 km) north-west of Newcastle, serves the border town of Berwick-upon-Tweed in Northumberland, England. It is owned by Network Rail and managed by London North Eastern Railway (LNER).

It is the most northerly railway station in England, being less than 3 miles (4.8 km) from the border with Scotland. The station, with its long single island platform, lies immediately to the north of the Royal Border Bridge.

France, Alsace, Colmar, Winter 2022

Colmar is a city in Alsace, north-eastern France. The city is renowned for its well-preserved old town, its numerous architectural landmarks, and its museums. Colmar is situated on the Alsatian Wine Route and considers itself to be the "capital of Alsatian wine". The area that is crossed by canals of the river Lauch is now called "little Venice" (la Petite Venise), a popular touristic attraction. Colmar's cityscape served as inspiration for the design of the Japanese animated film Howl's Moving Castle.

A shot originally uploaded ten years ago, now given a spruce-up in the virtual darkroom, and a re-launch.

It was taken at Bridlington Station in the 1970s where the track layout and facilities were still largely intact from the headier days of the 50's/60s when numerous trains would typically arrive during summer weekends disgorging thousand of passengers into the town, either for day trips, or to the local B&Bs and hotels for those staying longer.

The signage is that of the North Eastern Region with its distinctive orange background. One of several regions created in 1948 when British Railways was nationalised, it would remain in existence for less than 20 years before being absorbed into the Eastern Region in 1967.

The wide sliding-gates of the luggage only entrance talk to the one-time importance of the holiday traffic. However this started to decline from the early 60s as the motor car became more affordable and foreign holidays more accessible. By the time this shot was taken in 1976, the once regular holiday trains from the likes of central Yorkshire and The Midlands were pretty well a thing of the past.

My journey here was by courtesy of an Away Day excursion from Nottingham. Such trips, along with the so-called 'Mystery' excursions, were a regular feature of British Rail at the time and were intended to encourage more folk to travel by train. Needing little encouragement myself, I'd regularly pick up the quarterly flyer advertising them and note any of interest - they proved a useful, as well as cheap, way of visiting a distant part of the network that was new to me.

On this occasion haulage was by Peak 45004, and the route up was via Chesterfield, the freight-only line through Barrow Hill, Selby and Hessle. Finally, just to really date it, pipe-smoking Harold Wilson (Labour) was our Prime Minister at the time.

Burano, Venice, Italy

Deep in the Venetian lagoon, in north-eastern Italy, lies the magical island of Burano. It is an island which has been influenced by legends of mermaids and, more prosaically, fog. Whilst it was the swish of the mermaid’s tail which inspired the island’s distinctive white lacework, it was their practical response to the dense, low fog in the lagoon which draws the visual artists. Almost every single house in Burano is painted in a vibrant colour. The result was that the island’s fishermen could see the island in the fog. There are many examples of aesthetically pleasing groups of colourful houses, including the Bo Kaap in Cape Town and the Nyhavn in Copenhagen, but nothing comes close to the beauty of Burano. These three images show the three canal views from the Tre Ponti (“Three Bridges”).

River just outside Grado, Italy. Grado (Venetian: Gravo, Latin: Gradus is a town and comune in the north-eastern Italian region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, located on an island and adjacent peninsula of the Adriatic Sea between Venice and Trieste.

Once mainly a fishing centre, today it is a popular tourist destination, known commonly as L'Isola del Sole ("The Sunny Island"), also famous because it is also a spa town; together with Marano Lagunare, it is the centre of the Marano-Grado Lagoon, which is famous for its uncontaminated nature. Grado is the birthplace of Biagio Marin, a poet who sang about the island in the local Venetian dialect.
