VANCOUVER -- A weathered 7,200-square-foot orca mural on the side of the Old Continental Residence at the north end of the Granville Street bridge is getting a makeover.

A rededication ceremony was held Monday at the mural by the Wyland Foundation, a non-profit organization that promotes, art, science, and conservation.

Vancouver's mural, which greets downtown commuters each day, was originally painted by renowned muralist Robert Wyland, the foundation's creator, in 1994 and features orcas breaching the water.

He volunteered to repaint the mural in an effort to raise awareness towards environmental conservation during the Olympics.

"We want this mural to serve as a reminder to everyone who comes to Vancouver, especially during the Olympics, of the importance of working together as a global community to protect our environment," said Wyland in a statement from his foundation.

"It just looked so ravaged. It was a disservice for it to continue to look like that," added Steve Creech, the foundation's special projects director. Creech said the restoration effort has been "massive." There are about 70 layers of paint that need to be chipped away, and the surface needs to be refinished in many areas, Creech said.

"He's kind of like the Terminator of art so we're just going for it," in time to finish for the Olympics, Creech said of Wyland, who owns the Guinness record for the world's largest mural.

Worldwide, Wyland has painted 100 murals of marine life. His last mural was created for the 2008 Beijing Olympics. The mural restoration is a byproduct of hundreds of hours of volunteered time, painting supplies, and money from the Wyland Foundation, Vancouver paint company Pure Painters, and various supporters of the arts, including Canadian wildlife artist Robert Bateman.

"Not a penny of city money went into this," Creech said.

The Organizing Committee for the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games (Vanoc) also gave Wyland the honour of painting Olympic rings on the mural, Creech said.

"Chavalos".....the term for children who live & sleep on the streets of Granada......some as young as 5 yrs old. Homelessness and hunger often leads to substance abuse, here & elsewhere in the world....but it's a disturbing sight, to see young children wandering the streets with tubes of glue in brown paper bags..........sniffing glue staves off hunger, I've been told..............while it fries the brain. I learned of one struggling non-profit organization "Chavalos de Granada" helping street kids with hot meals once a week, limited medical attention, flip-flops to clad bare feet, bus fare to shelters for the night. While sitting one night at a sidewalk-cafe table on calle La Calzada, the young boy in the photo approached. He was kind of grubby and charmingly assertive. He asked for money but had something to offer in exchange. He'd made a flower out of a green palm frond (imagine origami from a leaf rather than paper). Is he still out there a year later?

chavalo.......nicaraguan jargon for 'a kid' usually under age 12

Dangers and Consequences of Glue-Sniffing

from the blog of "chavalos de granada" chavalosdegranada.blogspot.com/

After chronic glue sniffing, the body and mind can become seriously damaged, as use increases and tolerance builds. The brain and the rest of the nervous system begin to experience damage, as nerve tissues are repeatedly attacked by toxic chemicals present in glue fumes. Glue sniffers can also experience cognitive problems from brain damage, developing learning disabilities, memory problems and mood disorders.

Chronic glue sniffing can also attack other organs within the body, such as the kidneys and liver. With repeated glue sniffing, the lungs become damaged as well, making them prone to chronic or chemical bronchitis. Over time, the nasal cavity becomes eroded by glue sniffing, and skin throughout the body and on the lining of the nose becomes irritated and compromised.

I haven't been flickr'ing much anymore, and believe me when I say this is not a picture that I ever thought I would take, much less share to the world, or at least my corner of it.

This is my friend Jennifer. On November 15th-16th, her significant other beat the living shit out of her, calling her a cunt and telling her this was only about half of what she actually deserved.

This was the third time this had happened in their 2 year relationship. I accidentally caught a post of a selfie of hers on Instagram that she quickly took down. There was enough time for me to absorb what had happened and for me to reach out to her and insist that we take pictures for a court date that she had not made yet.

This is one of many I took on Sunday November 17th. Jennifer no longer has the bruises on her eyes or her arms, the one from her neck is fading away from the attempted strangulation...her ear drum is perforated so who knows when she will be able to hear properly out of it again, if ever.

She is one of the most amazing, kind and caring women I have ever known, and she loved him very much, and I'm sure part of her still does. But this relationship is over. This is not okay. We are not okay.

Jennifer was brave enough to share her story, and a lot of us started to share ours. We have started Jericho Roses, where anyone with a history of abuse or is currently being abused can share their stories with us, anonymously or publicly. We will have an email set up through my non-profit organization The Women's Groovement, but for now we have a p.o. box.

If you or someone you know has a story to tell, who needs help, who has survived and wants to help others, I urge you to pass along this address.

Jericho Roses

P.O. Box 314

Independence, KY 41051

We decided to name it after the Jericho rose as it is known to be a plant of survival and resurrection. I’m not a religious person, but it pays respect and acknowledges those that are.

Our goal is to publish these stories in a book to help us all heal, to give us strength and opportunity to reach out and get help and to connect with people that can help.

Much love to all of you.

to do it Vegas style when it comes to medical research and treatment facilities.

I'm a big fan of Frank Gehry's work -- the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, being my favorite.

The Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health in Las Vegas is definitely Gehry -- but surprisingly enough, there's really nothing else in Vegas quite like it.You could say some of the buildings in the City Center area of the strip are Gehry's influenced, but this is the real deal. It's off the beaten path when it comes to Vegas -- away from the Strip and in the relatively new Downtown area, Symphony Park.

I wanted to shoot it at night because of photos I had seen of it on the web. A Sunday night to shoot this area of downtown Vegas is ideal -- it's like a ghost town there -- and it was only around 9pm. Talk about rolling up the sidewalks.

Not everybody likes it. One critic described it like this:

"It seems to say: This is your brain on Frank Gehry. If I had a problem with my brain, I would not be reassured arriving at this place."

That's brutal.

On the other hand, it has one of the largest Alzheimer's research programs in the country, as well as treating patients with Huntington's, Parkinson's disease, and MS.

Love it or hate it, it's undeniably Gehry, and totally Vegas. I'd love to see the inside in person as well.

Los Quinchos feeds an average of 40 children from the landfill a day. For most of these children this would be their only decent meal if not their only meal of the day. When I was here in March/April, there was a protest amongst the garbage pickers/residents of La Chureca because the people driving the dump trucks scavenged for the "best" garbage already. It cuts the residents earnings and so that week alone, the center had to reduce the amount of food given to each child to feed the high volumes of children that showed up to be fed.

This is Wilfredo. He's 16 years old, was homeless, has been living in La Chureca the past 3 years with his mom. His father, whom he was very close to passed away a year ago. He sniffs glue, comes to Los Quinchos to break his habit and for the free meal that Los Quinchos provides...and he's now my 9th student.

This might be one of the first of many mistakes that I might be making, but after talking to him, I felt something in him that is more humane than most people I've met in my life time. I wanted to give him a chance...

I know we belong somewhere other than this

Hope burns in our blood, control clenched within our fists

And she thinks there is no way through this

But Woah, love is the movement

"It's an anniversary of sorts.

It was three years ago tonight

that Jon Foreman from Switchfoot wore the first TWLOHA shirt on stage,

at a sold out SF show at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton.

At the time, we had simply set out to help a friend and tell a story.

No plans to start a non-profit

or a movement or anything like that.

But we learned that night

that the story we were telling

was connected to something much bigger.

We heard from people at that show

who knew the pain of losing a loved one to suicide.

We heard from people dealing with depression and addiction and self-injury.

We heard from people writing in on behalf of friends and family,

people asking how they could help, how they could learn more,

how they could get involved.

My friend Chad Butler plays drums in Switchfoot

and he wore the shirt the next night in Jacksonville.

Deon Rexroat from Anberlin put one on before a show in New York a few days later,

and i don't think he took it off for a year.

The shirts were curious billboards

and so everywhere these bands went,

the messages would follow -

questions and confessions

and folks wanting to learn to fight for their friends.

And it wasn't just bands serving as the spark -

it was conversations over lunch in school cafeterias,

friends at work,

strangers in airports...

Countless moments that started with something like

"What does your shirt mean?"

Somewhere along the way,

between that night in Boca and this night where you are,

our story bumped into yours.

We're certainly thankful for it,

as it's been a privilege and a surprise

beyond what we or i could ever begin to explain.

We've said it before but it still feels true and so we say it:

We're all in this together.

Thanks for being part of it...

Peace to you.

every time i've been asked what this shirt means when i wear it,

i feel like i won't ever have enough time to get my words out

to try and describe what it means to me.

i can't even begin to think of where to start,

so just thank you<3

This morning I was checking on the date of the MOD walk in my area. { Something I do every year.} Decided to dedicate today's 366 image to this organization. This is my favorite charity and one I support regularly. Here is a little history and info.

The March of Dimes Foundation is a United States nonprofit organization that works to improve the health of mothers and babies. It was originally founded by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1938 to combat polio. Once this mission was accomplished the M.O.D. Foundation switched its focus to improving the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality.

The March of Dimes provides mothers, pregnant women and women of childbearing age with educational resources on baby health, pregnancy, preconception and new motherhood, as well as supplying information and support to families affected by prematurity, birth defects, or other infant health problems.

If you are in the U.S. and would like to walk for babies please click here to find an event.

If you would like to help sponsor the March of Dimes please click here

Guemes Channel. Curtis Wharf.

"The Adventuress is a 133-foot gaff-rigged schooner. Built at the Rice Brother’s Boatyard, in East Boothbay, Maine as a private yacht, the ship was launched in 1913. Her owner, John Borden II, the founder of Chicago’s Yellow Cab Co. sailed The Adventuress from Maine, around the tip of South America, and north to the Arctic. Borden intended to sail to Alaska to catch a bowhead whale for the American Museum of Natural History in New York. Borden's efforts to catch a whale failed and he sold Adventuress to the San Francisco Bar Pilots Association, which marked the beginning of her career as a workboat. For 35 years, she transferred pilots to and from cargo vessels near the Farallone Islands. During World War II, she was a United States Coast Guard vessel, guarding San Francisco Bay"

Around 1952, Adventuress was brought to Seattle, where she went through several owners. Eventually, she wound up in the care of Monty Morton and Ernestine Bennett, who managed a non-profit sail training organization called Youth Adventures. Under their ownership, the boat was restored to most of her original lines.

Today Adventuress is operated by the non-profit organization Sound Experience, as a platform for environmental education about Puget Sound."

here behind the gates of Los Quinchos the children are looking down at the lagoon that was created last year. The lagoon is filled with trash, yet the kids swam there and wash their clothes there.

As you can see in front of them are landscapes created by trash.

Here at Los Quinchos, the children are taught by volunteers. It is also here that the children are fed. As I'm sure alot of them come here to have a moment of escape from their reality and to be fed possibly their only meal of the day.

This little grotto, tucked away in Warrington, Pennsylvania, was an abandoned shell of a stone shack for a long long time. It is believed to have been owned by the Church and the neighboring convent in the early 20th century. In 1987 it transferred hands to a real estate agent. In 2007 it was rescued and renovated by Mr. Vincent Russo. While I was here today, and by surprise, Mr. Russo arrived and allowed me some time inside. He's a good man and did a really great job with saving this place. The location is also referred to as The Lost Grotto of The Virgin Mary, The Lost Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes, and the Father Gallen Grotto.

When I was growing up in this area, the building was pretty much abandoned. It had fallen into the hands of vandals and was so neglected that it was hard to look at. Seeing it restored like this reminds me that great art can come from the most surprising kinds of places.

Please see my other photos of this grotto in my folder "The Sacred."

Here's one of the 60 children that Los Quinchos help to feed with the nurse that is just as loving to the children as their mothers would be. Alot of the children here are so affectionate and so loving. I remembered when she (the little girl) had to go to a potty break. She was scared, so she took me by my hand and led me to the latrina. It was so adorable to see her trusting me like that
