The Bariola Farm in Tontitown is being nominated under Criteria A and C with statewide significance. Under Criterion A, the Bariola Farm is significant for its direct association with the Italian agricultural colony at Tontitown. The Bariola Farm is significant under Criterion C as the best extant example of an Italian immigrant-constructed multiple family dwelling with associated farm-related outbuildings. Constructed from 1910 to 1915, the Bariola house is one of two houses that remain from this period of the development of Tontitown, and it is the only house that has been continually lived in.
The Bariola Farm is being nominated under Criterion C with statewide significance as the best extant and continually lived in example of a rubble stone-construction, multiple-family dwelling designed and constructed by Italian immigrants. There are no known houses remaining from the earliest period of the founding of Tontitown. Of the later houses which reflect the native Italian method of stone construction, only two are still standing, the Bariola house and the Marsoni House. The two-story Marsoni House, currently abandoned, was constructed in 1913 by Adriano and Rinaldo Marsoni. It resembles the Bariola house in appearance; however, the second floor is constructed of cast concrete blocks, like those of the addition to the Bariola house, and the roof pitch is much shallower.
The period of significance for the Bariola Farm covers the period from 1910, when construction was begun on the house, to 1927, the date of the two-story addition to the front of the house.

Photographed on the Ashley River, Canterbury, New Zealand.
Family: Charadriidae is a small (18 cm) wader in the plover family of birds. It lives in beaches, mud flats, grasslands and on bare ground. Two subspecies are recognised, the nominate bicinctus breeding in New Zealand and the Chatham Islands and Charadrius bicinctus exilis breeding in the Auckland Islands. Adults in breeding plumage are white, with a dark greyish brown back, and have a distinctive brown breast, with a thinner band of black below the neck, and between the eyes and beak. Younger birds have no bands, and are often speckled brown on top, with less white parts. They are fairly widespread in the south of New Zealand, but not often seen in the north. The nominate subspecies is partly migratory, breeding in New Zealand and the Chatham Islands and some wintering in Australia, New Caledonia, Vanuatu and Fiji, others staying in New Zealand. The Auckland Islands subspecies is sedentary but some birds move from their territories to the shore. Their eggs are grey, speckled with black, making them well camouflaged against river stones and pebbles, which make up the main structure of their very simple nest. Size: 20 cm, 60g; adult in breeding plumage is white underneath with 2 bands, a thin black band on the lower neck and a broad chestnut band on the breast; non breeding plumage is variable but largely without the bands; short dark grey bill, black eye, yellowish, grey, green legs.
