Nominated for 5 Day Challenge - FYI - I was challenged by

my forever friend, Karen, aka... Adventures of KM&G-Morris

for a 5 Day Challenge / Black & White. Where one can either

modify the color to b&w for the challenge or post a B&W. It

is for five days posting in B&W. It's just a fun thing to do and

a learning exercise, not a group to join or post in just on your

own photostream. So this is my 4th of the 5. Check out Karen's B&W images for the challenge she received and passed on

to me... Enjoy Karen's here: www.flickr.com/photos/mzmo/15427375524/

I am supposed to challenge someone else to do B&W

for five days... "5 Day B&W Challenge" so I am having

to go back and challenge as I forgot to do that as I

posted so on my 4th post I am challenging Felix aka

www.flickr.com/photos/felixss/ to this very interesting

challenge which I know Felix will do great images for

his challenge answer in B&W!!!

The experience was just wonderful, emotive, filled with emotions and great moments next to many friends and colleagues. We where very happy that we assisted, Being nominated was already great treat, but i cant lie that it feels nice to have won one :-)

Photo Stuff: I took my new (to me) Canon G15 compact, as at all these events, big cameras are a big No No, I have to say this little camera is a big surprise, not only practical, light and compact to carry, much nicer results than expected, Not my Full Frame Nikon D600 by any stretch, but got the job done, mostly shot RAW, developed in LR4

Physical characteristics

Nominate race pale sandy-buff, tinged pinkish below, feathers of crest with white subterminal spots and blac tips. White band across tips of primaries, white tips on inner primaries. Bill grey, legs rather short, flesh-grey to dark grey. Sexes similar except female slightly smaller and duller, throat more whitish. Races vary mainly in size, depth of coloration and some other details.

Habitat

Occurs in open woodland, pastures, orchards, sand-heathland, parkland, farmland, also seppe and broken ground. In Africa occurs also in dry and wooded savanna. Favours short-grass or bare ground, with scattered trees or cliffs to holes for roosting and nesting.

Other details

Upupa epops is a widespread breeder across much of the southern half of Europe, which accounts for less than a quarter of its global breeding range. Its European breeding population is large (>890,000 pairs), and was stable between 1970-1990. Although the species was stable across much of Europe during 1990-2000, several populations suffered declines, most notably the sizeable one in Turkey, and the species probably underwent a moderate decline (>10%) overall. Consequently, this previously Secure species is now provisionally evaluated as Declining.

Feeding

Diet mostly large insects and their larvae and pupae, also small vertebrates: lizards, snakes, frogs, and geckos. Usually forages alone, or pairs feed in close proximity. Forages mostly on ground, digging and probing with bill in soft earth, also turns over leaves and other debris.

Conservation

This species has a large range, with an estimated global Extent of Occurrence of 1,000,000-10,000,000 km². It has a large global population, including an estimated 1,800,000-3,500,000 individuals in Europe (BirdLife International in prep.). Global population trends have not been quantified; there is evidence of a population decline, but the species is not believed to approach the thresholds for the population decline criterion of the IUCN Red List (i.e. declining more than 30% in ten years or three generations). For these reasons, the species is evaluated as Least Concern. [conservation status from birdlife.org]

Breeding

Breeds January-May in Palearctic, August-Jan in Africa, and January-June in Malay Peninsula. In Southern areas double brooded. Monogamous, solitary and territorial breeder. Nest is built in natural hole in stump, tree, wall, old building or cliff. Unlined or slightly lined. 5-8 eggs in Palearctic and 4-7 in tropics. incubation by female for a period of 16-18 days. Nestling downy in first 3-5 days, later covered in long spiny quills. First breeding at 1 year.

Migration

Migratory in northern parts of range, partially migratory to resident elsewhere. Nominate epops, breeding in all west Palearctic except Egypt and southern Algeria, winters in small numbers in North Africa and Mediterranean basin, only exceptionally further north. Probably most European migrants winter in Africa south of Sahara, where not distinguishable in the field from local senegalensis. Migration (much of which nocturnal) occurs on broad front across Europe and Mediterranean, and probably across Sahara also. Migration seasons notably protracted. Autumn dispersal spans mid-July to late October or even into November; normal termination period masked by overwintering in southern breeding areas. Begin arriving south of Sahara in second half of August, with main arrivals there September-October. Return movement detected from early February in Morocco and Malta; at peak mid-March to April, tailing off during May. In Britain and Ireland, recorded in every month but chiefly in spring, with marked peak April-May; autumn records peak September; spring records involve overshooting in anticyclonic weather and arrivals in overcast conditions with fronts moving into English Channel and North Sea. Individuals of the dark east Palearctic race saturata apparently occur regularly in Sweden in autumn, perhaps as a result of reversed migration, some remaining through winter.

Brown County, KS

Listed: 08/21/2006

The Hiawatha Courthouse Square Historic District (1872-1950) is centered around the Brown County Courthouse Square in Hiawatha, Kansas. The district is nominated to the National Register of Historic Places under Criterion A in the area of COMMERCE, as a physical reminder of the town's development as the largest community in Brown County. The district encompasses 61 buildings in various styles that reflect eras associated with the town's periods of development.

The buildings within the district are primarily representative of three architectural eras: Late Victorian; Late 19th and 20th Century Revivals; and Late 19th and Early 20th Century American Movements — Commercial Style. These eras reflect the stages of the town's development, spanning early settlement through its boom period in the last quarter of the 19th Century and into the first half of the 20th Century. The district includes 35 buildings that were constructed in 1900 or earlier and 22 buildings built between 1901 and 1950. The district has 44 contributing buildings and 17 noncontributing buildings. Two significant features are also part of the district— the circa 1911 brick streets (listed as a structure) and the 1904 streetlights (listed as an object) that survived the courthouse square.

Short History of Hiawatha

The late 1870s brought to a close the formative period of Hiawatha. Brown County and the town had grown considerably since its founding just over twenty years earlier. The 1870s brought masonry construction to commercial buildings, representing an eye toward permanence. By the end of the decade, the first telephone came to the county and Irvine Hall was built at Highland—the first college building in the state of Kansas. The area was poised for significant growth and experienced a substantial building boom beginning around 1880.

The turn of the century found businesses thriving in downtown Hiawatha. During the first two decades of the twentieth century, businesses continued to grow and prosper, civic improvements were built as symbols of prosperity and new commercial buildings and homes were constructed around town. New streetlights were installed in 1904 and the new Carnegie Library was dedicated in 1907 at 431 Oregon.

The first quarter of the 20th Century was distinguished by the construction of civic architecture around the courthouse square. The existing U.S. Post Office was constructed at the southeast corner of 7th and Utah in 1917. The Memorial Auditorium was erected by the City of Hiawatha on the south side of the square as a Memorial to local residents who served in the First World War. Dedicated on November 30, 1921, the auditorium was designed by Topeka architect Thomas W. Williamson. It served the city as a public auditorium and meeting hall for more than fifty years. It closed in 1977 and stood vacant until purchased by the Brown County Historical Society in 1980 for use as a community historical museum. Hiawatha's third courthouse was erected in 1925, replacing the brick courthouse built in 1879. The present courthouse was built while the former building was still in use, as the 1879 building was located on the east side of the lot. The new building was designed by Hutchinson architect, William Earl Hulse, who also designed six other Kansas courthouses between 1913 and 1931. This courthouse is still in use today, standing in the center of the square surrounded by a landscaped lawn.

What makes these mummies unique is the process of mummification wherein a salty solution with unknown herbs is ingested. They then burn it for a year hence the name. You would probably want to note that the process is done before the dying's last breath. The brain cells are preserved.
