Northern New Mexico off of highway 68 in between Taos and Santa Fe.

This giant has succumbed to whatever was ailing it. Too much drought? Old age? Some kind of pest? The wind did the rest.

Still reviewing my images from my trip to New Mexico last month. Caught this one just outside of Los Alamos, NM, while trying to catch a sunrise on the opposite horizon.

Probably 50 years past last timber harvest. Some of the stumps are massive. It must have been magnificent.

 

One day it will be magnificent again, because This part of the forest is now stewarded by the Lower Nehalem Community Trust, in perpetuity. So these trees, moss, lichen, and ferns will persist and evolve as a natural habitat, providing shelter and feeding grounds for birds, invertebrates, and the occasional large mammal, into the unforeseeable future.
