ALCO Discount Store, 901 West Tucumcari Boulevard, Tucumcari, New Mexico. The ALCO store chain declared bankruptcy in 2014 and the stores closed in December of that year.
Probably 50 years past last timber harvest. Some of the stumps are massive. It must have been magnificent.
One day it will be magnificent again, because This part of the forest is now stewarded by the Lower Nehalem Community Trust, in perpetuity. So these trees, moss, lichen, and ferns will persist and evolve as a natural habitat, providing shelter and feeding grounds for birds, invertebrates, and the occasional large mammal, into the unforeseeable future.
