On a trip to Ooty, a popular hill station in South India you drive through one of the most charming landscapes in India. The Nilgiris (Blue Mountains) are visible here from a small hamlet in the plains called Pasur. Though this is not the season for visiting these destinations, the monsoons are the best time to shoot dramatic skylines. I was glad to stop my car and catch a magical moment as the sun set behind the mountains.

This blue robin, endemic to India's Western Ghats, is very similar in appearance to the White-bellied Blue Robin which occurs in the same mountain range. In fact they were, until recently, a single species known as the Rufous-bellied Shortwing. Like its close relative, it is a shy, skulking species which lives in the undergrowth of sheltered woods or sholas. Sadly, it also shares the same endangered conservation status as the other blue robin. This bird was photographed, after a couple of hours of intensive searching, on the outskirts of the hill station city of Ooty.

Rajamala is a wildlife sanctuary located about 15 km from Munnar. It is the natural habitat of Nilgiri Tahr, a rare Mountain goat. Half the world population of this rare species is concentrated in this region. The animal is fast becoming extinct. The total number of Nilgiri Tahrs in Rajamala is estimated at 1317. This sanctuary is part of the Eravikulam Wildlife Sanctuary, and visitors are allowed to certain tourism areas in the Rajamala region.

In the Mustang District of the Himalayas, Nepal, this is North Nilgiri (7062 m, 23,166 feet) that I photographed from the bank of the incredible Kali Gandaki river that bisects the Himalayas. This is on the pilgrimage route from India to the holy site Muktinath in the Himalayan foothills of Nepal.
A bird that is endemic to the Queen of the hills in Southern India !! Tough one to get especially in the open and it was a hectic schedule but managed to get to hearts content

The Nilgiri flycatcher (Eumyias albicaudatus) is an Old World flycatcher with a very restricted range in the hills of southern India. It was formerly referred to as the Nilgiri verditer flycatcher because of its similarity to the verditer flycatcher, a winter migrant to the Nilgiris, which, however, has distinct dark lores and a lighter shade of blue. There are two small white patches at the base of the tail. It is found mainly in the higher altitude shola forests of the Western Ghats and the Nilgiris.
