Hi everyone, I haven't had time to take any photos for a while now since my course is a lot more demanding this year. Unfortunately, I probably won't upload any new photos for another month after this since exams are coming soon.
I hope you like this new photo! Smoking is a terrible habit but damn doesn't it look cool!?
Can't wait to start taking photos again. I have so many ideas but not enough time!

A hookah or shisha, is a single- or multi-stemmed instrument for heating or vaporizing and then smoking either tobacco, flavuored tobacco (often Mu‘assel), or sometimes cannabis, hashish, and in the past opium. The smoke is passed through a water basin—often glass-based—before inhalation.
The health risks of smoking through a hookah include exposure to toxic chemicals that are not filtered out by the water and risk of infectious disease when hookahs are shared.
There are two theories regarding the origin of the hookah. The first is that following the introduction of tobacco to medieval India by the Jesuits, and since then tobacco use became widespread. The hookah or water-pipe was invented by Abu’l-Fath Gilani, a Persian physician of Akbar, in the Indian city of Fatehpur Sikri during Mughal India; the hookah spread from the Indian subcontinent to Persia first, where the mechanism was modified to its current shape, and then to the Near East. Alternatively, it could have originated in the Safavid dynasty of Persia, from where it eventually spread to the Indian subcontinent.
Despite tobacco and drug use being considered a taboo when the hookah was first conceived, its use became increasingly popular among nobility and subsequently widely accepted. Gradually, burned tobacco has been commonly replaced by vaporizing flavoured shisha. Still the original hookah is often used in rural South Asia, which continues to use Tumbak (a pure and coarse form of unflavoured tobacco leaves) and smoked by burning it directly with charcoal. While this method delivers a much higher content of tobacco and nicotine, it also imposes more adverse health effects compared to vaporized shisha hookahs.
The word hookah is a derivative of "huqqa", a Hindustani word, of Arabic origin (derived from حُقَّة ḥuqqa, "casket, bottle, water pipe"). Outside its native region, hookah smoking has gained popularity throughout the world, especially among younger people. Source Wikipedia.

A camera I've had under restoration for a little while now. Whilst overall in good cosmetic condition, the camera was filthy and coated with nicotine residue I think. It had obviously been kept in its open position for a long time gathering dust and dirt etc...
The only way to clean it properly was to strip it down and clean all the parts carefully without going too far! Batteries had leaked in the rangefinder and the shutter release was jammed / very sticky, some of the leather needed regluing and all the light seals in the camera and back needed replacing as I found out after film roll number 1 which was totally ruined! Some minor touch up of paint work and making a 6x9 mask for the ground glass finished the project!
The camera came with some 4x5 sheet film holders as well as the pictured Horseman 120 roll film back in 6x9 format.
I don't think this camera has had excessive use - its condition overall after cleaning is too good for a high use camera and the bellows are in top order luckily!
According to its serial number and online information, this example was produced in 1963.

It only takes one for the chemical addiction of nicotine to take hold. It's disappointing to read that New Zealand are rolling back on their world leading smoking ban programme under the new right wing government. Sure, it will raise taxes but at the cost of many, many lives. Money before lives - yet again.

Nicotine is the chemical in tobacco that makes it hard to quit. Nicotine produces pleasing effects in your brain, but these effects are temporary. So you reach for another cigarette. The more you smoke, the more nicotine you need to feel good. When you try to stop, you experience unpleasant mental and physical changes.

Commercially manufactured cigarettes are seemingly simple objects consisting mainly of a tobacco blend, paper, PVA glue to bond the outer layer of paper together, and often also a cellulose acetate–based filter. While the assembly of cigarettes is straightforward, much focus is given to the creation of each of the components, in particular the tobacco blend, which may contain over 100 ingredients, many of them flavourants for the tobacco. A key ingredient that makes cigarettes more addictive is the inclusion of reconstituted tobacco, which has additives to make nicotine more volatile as the cigarette burns.

A number of studies, the latest by The Lancet, have found that current smokers are significantly less likely to catch the coronavirus. Even those in at risk groups such as the obese and diabetics have a greatly reduced chance of catching COVID if they are current smokers. Ex-smokers don't have any reduction in risk at all. There is uncertainty as to the reason but the most plausible hypothesis is that inhaled nicotine binds to the ACE-2 receptors that coronavirus exploits and therefore prevents a higher viral load from getting in. Don't all rush for the cigarettes though! The double-edged sword is that if smokers do catch this virus, the already damaged lungs mean that they are statistically more likely to suffer serious disease and require intensive medical care.
The Lancet study is a very interesting read if you are that way inclined. Thought I would share one of the weirder and unexpected aspects of this novel coronavirus. There is still so much to learn. Stay safe everyone!
Tobacco in a leased out field. Workers wear thick long sleeve shirts and plastic garbage bags with holes cut for head and arms to keep the nicotine off their skin which can cause nicotine poisoning and they work in the super Carolina Heat. There are also alternative smoking mixtures which do not contain nicotine and tobacco-based products. There have been no studies conducted on the health effects of these non-tobacco based products, but nonetheless many manufacturers market them as healthier herbal smoking alternatives to tobacco (which is also technically considered an herbal smoke). Frequently this herbal substitute is either sugar cane stalk, sugar cane beets, or tea leaves.
