Never summer mountains as seen from Ute trail in Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado. The famous Colorado river begins in never summer mountains.
What could be better than a stroll over Poudre Pass atop the Contintal Divide, without falling off, to find a nearly placid reflecting pool just like this to test your tranquility factor. Here, comfortably below the Grand Ditch, this water is actually flowing southwest toward the Pacific Ocean via the Colorado River, nee the Grand. The water flowing in the ditch above and to the right, raped from the Neversummers ahead, right, on the Western slope, is travelling the opposite way toward the Eastern Slope of Colorado behind this view. The area is actually semi-arid and water wars and skirmishes have pocked the dockets for a hundred years but are just starting over every remaining and unremaining drop. Carry your own water, enough for your trek or use your pump filter to slake thirst. R.E.I. reports that thre is NO safe surface water left on the face of the planet. Ah, the unquestioned march of modern man.
Sept 23, 2012. Viewing north with the southern Medicine Bow Mts in the distance (Rawah Wilderness). The mountain directly above Agnes Lake is the Nokhu Crags.
From Wikipedia:
In 1914, members of the Arapaho tribe were brought to the region in a trip sponsored by the Colorado Mountain Club. The tribe members spent their youth in the area and were asked to offer the Native American names for the various peaks, lakes and other geographic features in the area. They called the range Ni-chebe-chii, which translates to Never No Summer. Locals eventually settled on Never Summer Mountains for the range. (With this snowy scene in late June, it's easy to see why!)
"Nokhu Crags" (visible in Notes) is derived from the Arapaho language, Neaha-no-xhu, meaning "Eagles Nest."
Mount Richthofen, whose crags lie just in shadow, is the highest mountain in the Never Summer Mountains at 12,945 ft (3,946 m) .
Like so many other spectacular spots in the Rockies, the Continental Divide bisects this area.
