Close The Camps!

San Francisco

July 2, 2019

What started as a passionate rally across from Senator Dianne Feinstein's office, grew quickly (and I sense unexpectedly) into a spontaneous blockade of Market Street at lunchtime with over 1000 people, disgusted by US cruelty at the border, calling to immediately CLOSE THE CAMPS!! Two hours later, after a march down the center of Market Street and another street blockade, the rally ended outside the office of Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi. #closethecamps

WELL, February went out with a bang...and not in a good way.

Saturday afternoon I participated in my first necropsy (Kogia sima) and it was an intense five hours (with a TON of blood).

Then I went back to the apartment to relax the rest of the evening by myself. Around 8:30 there was some pretty intense knocking on the door. I figured it was just the usual drunk person at the wrong place so I turned off the TV and lights and went into my room. It went on for awhile, some jingling of the door handle etc, but it eventually stopped. My roommate Allie came back briefly but then left, while I was on the phone with my parents.

While I was talking with them the knocking/banging started again around 10pm, then all of the sudden there was this loud CRASH. I ran out of my room (parents still on the line freaking out) to see a guy standing in the doorway. I yelled "ARE YOU KIDDING ME? WHAT ARE YOU DOING?" and he mumbled something and walked away. I think he was as surprised as I was. I then had a nice chat with 911 dispatch and the police came. They believe it was an attempted burglary which really freaks me out because I basically just chastised someone who could've been really dangerous. Thankfully, we're all okay and Allie came back and we had wine, and tried to laugh off this awful situation.

February 2015, I won't miss you.

There was very little privacy in the latrines. There was no running water in the barracks.

Today is a very important day in my country. Today is the "Day of the memory", of the repudiation, because of prohibiting the freedom of expression, of thought. Today it's been 34 years since the most terrible coup d'etat in the Argentina's history, where more than 30.000 people disappeared and died. We claim for justice, for truth, for not to silence, for the memory, for each and every one of the people who died for their ideals, for the identity, we scream, never again.

March for Our Lives, Philadelphia

Once the Red Line reopens, I hope never to have to see this station again in my natural life.

Activists of all ages gathered for an afternoon of art, music and politics at our third Democracy Cafe in Mill Valley. This month, we looked into solutions to end gun violence, through a range of activities designed to inspire us to action. We started the day by making signs for the ‘March for Our Lives’ rally. We then sang along with the Freedom Singers. Marin County Supervisor Kate Sears led a group discussion on gun reform. Young singer Emma Spike performed songs of hope, and music director Reed Fromer led a final sing-along with some classic tunes about social change.

This free public event took place on Sunday, March 18th from 2 to 5pm, at the O'Hanlon Center for the Arts in Mill Valley. We were delighted to see many young people come make their own signs against gun violence, then stay to sing and talk with us.

Thanks to all our friends and neighbors who came to join their voices, minds and hearts to energize each other and create a better world. Kudos to our co-hosts Marilyn Price, Jennifer Tomkins, Rebecca Brackman, Grace Severtson -- and everyone who helped us organize this uplifting community event.

Democracy Cafe is a series of free creative and civic events led by Fabrice Florin and a growing community of activists and artists in Marin. We think making art, playing music and talking with people of all ages and backgrounds can build mutual understanding and engage us to take meaningful political action together.

Join your neighbors to make political art and music -- and keep democracy alive!
