Given today’s obsession with Facebook, Twitter and a plethora of other social media networks, you could be forgiven for thinking that the first thing a teenage girl would save if her house caught fire would be her smart phone. Not so with Emily Brett. Eliciting an answer to the question of what would be the one thing she would save if her house caught fire was easy. It’s a ‘no-brainer’ for Emily’, she would leave the smart phone to its fate and go all out to save her most treasured possession, ‘Hopsy’ the cuddly rabbit.
Asked why she would be so quick to discard her smart phone, bearing in mind, she, like most teenage girls always seem to have their ‘smart phones’ poised and ready to receive the next message, her reply was quick and robust. “I’ve had Hopsy since I was a baby. He is my favourite cuddly toy!” she insisted. “When I was younger I used to take him with me on holidays and would have him in bed with me at night. I can always get another smart phone but I couldn’t replace Hopsy! He means the world to me!”

The London County Council Tramways was an extensive network of public street tramways operated by the London County Council (LCC) across the County of London from 1899 until 1933, when responsibility passed to the London Passenger Transport Board (LPTB), later known as London Transport. The systems north and south of the River Thames were largely separate until the opening of the Kingsway Subway in 1908, which provided a direct connection between the two networks. On 1 July 1921, the LCC also took over operation of the Leyton Urban District Council Tramways.
By 1933, the network comprised 167 miles (269 km) of track, including approximately nine miles in Leyton and a quarter-mile section owned by the City of London. Much of central London remained without tram services because legislation enacted in 1872 prohibited tramways from operating there. Despite this, LCC trams regularly ran beyond the county boundaries through a series of connections and joint-running agreements with neighbouring municipal and company systems, reaching destinations such as Purley on the Croydon Corporation network, Barnet and Enfield on the Metropolitan Electric Tramways system, and Hampton Court on the tracks of London United Tramways.
On 1 July 1933, the undertaking was transferred to the London Passenger Transport Board. Although ownership passed to the new authority, the existing LCC tramways management initially remained in place, overseeing both London's extensive tram fleet and its smaller but expanding trolleybus system. The replacement of trams by trolleybuses accelerated during the 1930s, and by 1940 trams had been almost entirely eliminated north of the River Thames.

This map comes from a collection of more than 200 London transport maps that Ben Lazarus (1914–1994) gave me fifty years ago this week. Like me, Ben had been collecting transport maps since childhood.
His generosity transformed what was then my modest collection and encouraged me to continue collecting, laying the foundations of the wider collection I have today. Fifty years on, I would like to place on record my sincere thanks to Ben for his kindness, generosity and encouragement.
