This is trhe 3rd wasp nest we have had outside our front door. And then their genociding killing by me of them. This nest stung me the day before the bastards
Last night I saw a snapping turtle making a nest just off the Songbird Pond pathway.
Today I looked across the pond and saw another next apparently being prepared. Same turtle? It's hard to say ans the light last night at 8:15 p.m. was much different than the light this morning.
These turtles lay hundreds of eggs and they will be very vulnerable and a great majority won't survive.
I just realized when I look at the Large version that this turtle is covered with mud, making it look VERY different.

Many of us along the eastern seaboard are afflicted with clouds, rain, mist and flooding. The Potomac is a mess! I visited Pops on Friday and Saturday and stopped today. My concern a few days ago was Ma Osprey's return - as of Saturday I did not see her.
I stopped today to see if Ma Osprey had returned - didn't see her - Also to check on Pops Osprey - didn't see him either. I wasn't there long, so I am taking that into consideration.
The nest looks pretty good, as Pop's has been busy adding wood. I don't know for sure and am guessing that the weather has him taking a break of sorts. Only thing semi-active gulls, crows and a few ducks.
Also Pops Osprey arrived a full ten days earlier than last year. I know the females usually arrive shortly there after, but I am open to the idea that Ma Osprey will return this week on schedule, that's if she isn't back and I just didn't see her today.
It can't be much fun building nests in this weather or fishing. There are some dangerous rough water conditions.
Also, The Friends of Blackwater Osprey Cam is ready for the season. Also check out the Eagle Cam
Cardinals have nested in the rose bush that climbs around the garage. I haven't heard peeps from here yet, so I'm guessing any eggs that may have been lain have not yet hatched.

While removing wall and old insulation, I discover some kind of wasp or hornet nest. A slight shift in the main beam left a crack that enabled them to get in and build. See closeup (previous pic).
A House Sparrow landed by the nest and the juvenile Osprey looked at it and started bobbing its head back and forth. The mother is on the right side of the photo. This is near Lake Houston 6-10-14.
This carton nest is very conspicuousin nature. It´s built by the Azteca ants, which are sheer agressive. They are known by the interaction with Cecropia trees, that they defend. It´s not a very easy task to collect some nests. As a myrmecologist, I must do some activities like that, not so pleasuring!

So much of my Crows Nest journey has led me to two very strong conclusions. People here love their coffee and food. So with this many people talking about food I thought I needed to get a chef’s photo and story. This is never easy as chefs are always busy preparing for the days trade. But today I was lucky and I had a restaurant in mind, Peter Pan’s Italian Restaurant. This place is part of Crows Nest. If Crows Nest was a pizza it would super supreme and Peter Pan’s would be the base. Lets be honest about one thing, pizza toppings are the flavor but you get a bad base and the pizza is stuffed. The more I explore Crows Nest I really believe it is the small businesses that is the base of this community. They are the foundations. Peter Pan’s is part of this base and has been serving the people of Crows Nest for 19yrs. I have eaten there and its good!
Nelson has been cooking up a storm here for 3yrs and his signature dish BBQ Octopus marinated in garlic, oil and fresh herbs. I am a foodie in the same way I am an amateur photographer. I may not be brilliant at it but I really like doing it. I asked him what makes this his signature dish, with a grin a chef can only give you he answers it in a way all chefs answer the question ‘what’s your secret’, “ah you know its just the way I cook it, its juicy and tender and the customers they love it, no one does quite like me” (with a really think Italian accent). I guess I will never get the secretes to his success.
Nelson likes Crows Nest and he gets to meet lots of locals. As I was talking to him one regular walks in, when I mean regular he has being coming her for many many years, each person their knows his name and what he likes, but more than that they know about him and take the time to ask him how things are going, his wife and family. Its old school where service isn't good enough if the food is well prepared and delivered on time, its about traditional family. How many restaurants today do you walk into and the waiter, bartender, the owner and chefs know you? I think that is what makes Peter Pan's different and why in Crows Nest you will not find a McDonald's, people come to these places because the owners and the staff take time to get to know who you are. They treat you like family and they invite you in to their homes and take pleasure in preparing your meal.
Nelson likes the friendly nature of people in Crows Nest and this makes the atmosphere in the restaurant really enjoyable. I would also say its a mixture of the locals and the staff that make the atmosphere enjoyable. Its busy (but the best places always are) and there is a buzz about it a real energy. I had just one last question for Nelson and I asked him what do people in Crows Nest know about Italian food, and again with a grin he said “People in Crows Nest know their Italian food well”
Thanks Nelson and the team at Peter Pan's for sharing your Crows Nest.

Peter is a true local and is the owner of one of Crows Nest most famous establishments Xenos. Peter has been in Crows Nest for 40yrs, as he pointed out he has been working and living here longer than I have been alive.
With 40yrs under his belt I think Peter would know a thing a two about Crows Nest and how it has changed over time. I asked Peter how has the food and drink culture changed in Crows Nest over his time. He told me that at first his most popular items were beer, milkshakes and stake and eggs. Today its all types of different coffee, it’s a more sophisticated Mediterranean menu and wines are more popular than beers. Peters restaurant has always evolved with Crows Nest and I think as it has evolved it has helped Crows Nest also evolve too.
Peters journey with Xenos could almost be the journey of hospitality in Crows Nest. Peter describes Crows Nest as the leader in Hospitality on the Northern Beaches. It happens first in Crows Nest and it sets the pace and standard for other areas on the Northern Beaches area. Look briefly at Xenos journey:
1969 – 1979 Milk bar with 8 tables a menu of fish and hand cut chips and burgers
1979 – 1993 – with the days of the milk bar numbered a coffee lounge is borne. Its expanded and red vinyl, brass booths and polished hardwood tables. New Greek inspired foods add to an expanded menu
1993 – 2008 – Australia is in a recession that we had to have and it hits all business. Peter transforms once again, he brings a new dinning experience to Crows Nest, Alfresco dinning. His two sons join full time into the family business
2008 – Now – Xenos continues to evolve. Now has marble bar, expanded restaurant and kitchen, the outdoor area is weather proofed, giving it that real Melbourne lane way feel about it.
What has remained the same it Peter and the care he has for his customers and the quality comes through in every coffee and every meal.
Peter likes to think that his coffee’s educate people though experience. I can see why as you drink his coffee you taste greatness, but more than that as you talk to him you hear passion for what he does, you hear passion for Crows Nest. As I was talking Jane came up to the counter for her regular coffee, “morning Jane” from Peter. I say to him you have real connection with your customers. Peter tells me “they are like my family, Jane has been coming her for 16yrs. I have people here that now bring their kids and they are bringing their kids”. This is Peters extended family. He has been serving coffee and food to some families for three generations. What does that say about a place when three generations still go their each morning for a coffee.
Peters “extended “ family love this place. I know I am going on about this but its been her 40yrs and the same people have been coming and bringing their family. As I look around I notice that the walls are adorned with photos of a Xenos cup from one part of the word or another. Peter laughs and tells me people take his cup overseas with them and send him photos of his cup on holiday. There are photos of his cup from Rome, Pacific Islands, Greece, America etc. I think his cups have traveled more than most people I know. He talks about these photos as if they were post cards from loved ones, and in a way they are.
Peter loves Crows Nest and the people here. He talks about the different nationalities and that the people are “just so very, very nice, all with different qualities”.
Peters vision and connection to Crows Nest is what has allowed him to become an icon of Crows Nest. I think there would be few restaurants, cafes and wine bars that don’t owe Peter and Xenos a debt of thanks. Xenos has been the leader in adapting and growing the hospitality culture of Crows Nest. It is this reason that Peter isn’t a competitor but rather a leader in the industry and his success allows the success of many other venues.
Finally I will leave you with a few words from Peter that I really loved “This is my life, love the people, if I’m not at here I miss the people I love”
Thanks Peter

Contrary again to our fears the new nest site is perfectly big enough for the 'knees bend, arms stretch' exercises the chicks have been induging in over the last 2 weeks. From fairly lazy looking stretches they progressed to wing waves and are now onto the frantic flapping stage, interspersed with calming bouts of preening. Instinctively they know that muscles and feathers have to be in tip-top condition before the final jump. At the moment there appears to be one chick slightly in advance of the other - more vigorous in its flaps - so that it is regularly raising itself up to 3 or 4 feet above the nest. Just a puff of wind and it could be off at any time. Its sibling is holding back a bit and although both are managing to tear up their own food an incident on Friday proved that Mum is still on the lookout for signs of stress, After watching her smaller chick's struggles intently from her perch for some time she came down into the nest to feed it.
Will tomorrow be the day for a first flight? We are all crossing our fingers for a return to the sunny weather.
At Whinlatter we must say a big thankyou to BIg Brian and Long-Lens Ken for all the magnificent footage we are able to play, showing everyone DVD footage of the latest developments.
These nests were collected over years, from cut-down trees, blown out of trees, etc. Now I'm giving them back to nature...

“A nossa referência hoje é a upa Jk.
The Hummingbird was very kind to locate her nest were it was conveniently easy to photograph!! This is me at my client's house.
To view my set documenting this Hummingbird family (including my notes) click here.
There was nothing in the nest. Mama & Papa Gray Catbird were no where to be seen on the morning after Tropical Storm Elsa. No eggs. No egg shells in the nest. No egg shells on the ground. NOTHING! It is a true mystery to me. After all, I did take a photograph of the eggs.
Later that morning, I did hear the Catbirds, but I couldn't locate them in the yard.

This mud nest (assumed to be that of a wasp?) was about 1 cm in diameter. As of this writing (31 July 2008) it's still there... but now it's sealed up, presumably with a larva and its larder inside. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Potter_wasp
I dangled dangerously out of Louis' bedroom window to get my very own spring watch video! we have swallows & house martins nests all round the eaves of our house & I am planning to collect all the droppings for my veg patch!
Giant hornets made a nest under the eve of our house. We had to pull out all of the siding to clear out the nest, after a professional insect man came out and killed all of the hornets. There were at least 500 of them that came out when he started spraying ~ it was rather frightening. The nest was huge, about 2 feet in diameter and you can still see some of the hornets that were not hatched yet ~ yuck!
The male Osprey has been back for over a week, the female showed up today. The nest repairs began immediately.
