Strobist:

For the main shot there was 4 lights;

-A 430EX to camera right at 1/16th power with the built in diffuser down

-An Alien Bee B800 to camera left at 1/64th power through a translucent umbrella

-An Alien Bee B800 at 1/16th power above the sink (see set up link)

-A promaster 7500DX at 1/16th power right next to the toaster.

All-in-all about 5 hours of work to make the shot. I hope you like it... I thought up the idea during class. I was drawing up lighting schemes and they actually worked out just how I had hoped.

The lighting was different for the other parts of the composite I don't recall the powers on them. You can see the lights in the shots for some of the set up photos.

I can't decide if the toast looks too fake...

Quite a bit of tweaking on the photos in lightroom before photoshop.

I didn't really want to like the Monster High line ... but I can't seem to help myself.

The first one (a Draculaura) fell into my hands a while back, and gradually I found myself feeling guilty for her being all alone ...

so now she has a couple of pals ... obsession begins innocently enough ... :-/

So I finished designing my tiger tank and I will probably buy the parts later this week or next. My problem is don't know if I should make the tiger in light bluish grey or dark bluish grey? Please state your opinion. Thanks! :D

This YouTube link is unlike HDR in normal photography where wide colors and highlights are compressed into an SDR image but instead the large ranges are kept.

We really need rain. As you can see the stream is low and hardly moving. The pond looks terrible bc it's so low and algae is forming. We have treated it, but it hasn't helped much.

The Building Front from the Mens Exercise Yard, Southwell Workhouse, Southwell, Nottinghamshire.

This looks onto the Governor's Block in the middle, where they could keep an eye on the 'inmates'.

The details below are repeated on each photo, so if you've read it once (firstly, thank-you for showing an interest) you don't need to read it again :

---------------------------

I could write a book about workhouses. I could also get on my soapbox (on reading about workhouses) about how the attitudes to the poor by the rich have not changed one iota since those days - modern quotes from the rich and their lack of empathy towards the poor and their lack of willingness of the rich to contribute (and to actively avoid contributing via legal tax loopholes etc.) are almost identical to the attitudes of old. In places like Southwell, employment tended to be seasonal farm work, and they were laid off during the winter with not much hope of other employment. They were made to feel shamed and lazy and that it was their own fault that they were out of work. Just like now. Again I shall avoid the soapbox.

The Southwell workhouse was built in 1824 by Southwell Minsters Reverend John Becher as a residence for the poor. This workhouse was the first and used as a model for the nationwide system of hundreds of workhouses.

I'll not get into the details of the Poor Laws and the New Poor Laws here, but it's worth reading up on. The Workhouses came as a result of saving money because of the soaring cost of the equivalent of 'benefits' system (the poor laws). Note to self - keep of the soapbox (people that know me know that I am a socialist (proper socialist, NOT the Tory media image of socialism) because I actually care for and do something about people that are less well off than me). Sorry, took a step onto the box, but it does make my blood boil.

The Workhouse was a last resort for paupers. John Becher was a social reformer that set out his ideas in a pamphlet called 'The Anti-Pauper System'. The ideas were to reduce the tax burden, and to teach the poor to only ask for help as a last resort. The help provide was accommodation where discipline was exacting, accommodation basic and supervision constant.

On entry, people were segregated into several categories, never to meet while they were in residence (ie. families wouldn't see each other) as below :

Able bodied men

Able bodied women

Old and infirm men

Old and infirm women

Children under 7

Boys 7-12

Girls 7-15

Work for men was typically breaking rocks for use in roads, breaking old bones for fertiliser, picking oakum (old tarred rope) and for women, cooking, laundry, cleaning and picking oakum.

A typical timetable for 6 days a week was :

06:00 Rising Bell

06:30 Roll Call, Prayers then Breakfast (Bread and Gruel)

07:00 Work

12:00 Dinner (Boiled Meat and Potatoes or Soup. Saturdays Suet Pudding)

13:00 Work

18:00 Supper (Bread and Gruel)

20:00 Prayers then Bed

Christmas Day was Roast Beef and Plum Pudding. And the day off work.

I could go on, and on. It is worth reading about the workhouse system. Hopefully some of these pictures (uploaded over the next few days) will give some idea of what it was like. Visiting the workhouse was very poignant and sobering, but reading about it has made me realise that not a lot has changed in attitudes and divisions the in class system.

I've done a good job avoiding Starbucks, but I really needed some espresso, so I made a stop to the drive-thru (even though all the baristas I had gotten to know aren't ever there anymore when I go *sadface*) and got something for myself and my two sons who were with me.

For my 4yo I got an organic apple juice, and the guy handed it to me with a green straw. The kind you put in a tall cold cup or a grande cup with a flat lid. I had to actually ask him for a cup to pour the juice in, since the straw for the box had apparently been lost and there was no way one of the green straws was going to fit in the tiny hole in the box... *shakes head*

And I forgot until I'd already ordered that a new and shiny and bigger Starbucks opened up closer to where I live anyway, and I know at least one of my favorite baristas was going to work up there for a short time at least to help train the newbs. Oh well.

Keep thinking it's time to start filling the backyard bird feeder, but then I encounter another example of the true bumper crop of berries we've had this year...

I need a person from las palmas who helps me in a Salon del Manga de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. I will teach you all the things about amigurumi and then you must help me...dont be a bad person!!!

Please someone from las palmas who wants to help me ^_^
