Note the concentric circles in the water around the phalarope. These are caused by the bird spinning round and round in the nutrient-rich waters, creating whirlpools that stir up invertebrates.

This one was at the Nature Conservancy's Cheyenne Bottoms Preserve in Kansas, where we're heading for a few days starting tomorrow. So I'll be off of Flickr until Friday.

I took my mom out there to see the millions of waterfowl but most of them had left. What a difference a day makes.

I imagine that most viewers would not guess that this beautiful and dramatic landscape is, indeed in Kansas. It is a section of Niobrara Chalk formations, also known as badlands. This particular section is part of a 300 plus acre landscape known as Little Jerusalem, owned and managed by the Nature Conservancy. We had the privilege of spending a couple of mid-winter days exploring Little Jerusalem without a single other person in sight the whole time. A very peaceful and beautiful place.

Goldenrod is actually a group of plants in the aster family. It’s a big family and most of the 100-plus species (and dozens of hybrids, varieties and sub-species) are only found in North America. Most people are only familiar with the goldenrods that live in open areas — that burst of autumn yellow that emerges from old fields, meadows, roadsides and waste places.
