A federal Fish and Wildlife Service biologist and habitat restoration expert planting seedlings of the endangered golden paintbrush, Castilleja levisecta. Although it is difficult to tell from this picture, the planting site is actually on a 60 degree slope. What appears to be a hill in the background is actually level ground at the base of the bluff well over 100ft / 30m below.

"You must!"
"I cannot!"

"Never, you fiend! You dastardly villain!"
"Very well! Prepare to enjoy the rest of your life... as non-conjoined twins! Bah hah hah hah hah!!!"

"What does Los Angeles’ inner city have in common with a rugged island off the southern California coast? A group of young people who are dedicated to making the world a better and greener place. Through an innovative partnership between the LA Conservation Corps and The Nature Conservancy, at-risk youth between the ages of 18 and 24 are helping to restore Santa Cruz Island, while gaining valuable green job training in these difficult economic times."

The Nature Conservancy has this, and their web site says, in part, "The rocky plateau was exposed 12,000- 19,000 years ago when the Bretz Floods poured down the present Columbia River Gorge and far into the Willamette Valley. The floods swept soil and vegetation from parts of the valley and deposited granitic boulders (called "glacial erratics") from as far away as Canada." It's a great place to see, close to freeways and fairly level walking so do it!
In Texas, where I have seen this species before, the males are blue. Further west into New Mexico and Arizona, the color is more violet.
