What is it?
I'm not sure what this old piece of equipment is, couldn't get close enough for a good look because it's behind a fenced portion of the Ormond Beach Wetlands that's owned by the Nature Conservancy. It's near the end of a line of bare of utility poles leading to the east from the old Reliant Energy plant, and it obviously hasn't been in use for a long time. For reference, the post is about the diameter of a normal utility pole. There are two warning tags visible on the box -- the black one says "CAUTION: HOT TEMPERATURE IS NORMAL" and the red one reads "CAUTION TO AVOID POSSIBLE INJURY USE HANDLE, NOT PANEL EDGES WHEN OPENING AND CLOSING TILT OUT PANEL." Obviously can't see what units are measured or indicated by the detached and dangling dial.
Anyone out there have an idea what it is (or might have been)?

Marine turtle specialists Karen Bjorndal and Alan Bolten from the Archie Carr Center for Sea Turtle Research, University of Florida, survey green and loggerhead sea turtles near Williams and Billy Islands at the north end of West Andros. They report initial densities of young green turtles to be the highest they've seen in 30 years working in the Atlantic. The area is also special for young loggerheads. The efforts were hosted by Charles Beckwith, owner of Flamingo Key and his wife Cindy.
The remote west side of Andros Island in the Bahamas is the proposed site of a new national park and marine protected area. From June 18-30, 2006, The Nature Conservancy, organized a team of 20 researchers to participate in an ecological assessment of West Andros in to define priorities for planning the protected areas. The multi-national team of biologists focused on sea turtles, flamingos, bonefish, geology, benthic ecology, fish ecology, plant commuities, reptlies and amphibians.

Oregon Plan Award: The Nature Conservancy for the Willamette Confluence Project. The mined area was filled in 1992, when this photo was taken.
The Gordon Butler Nature Preserve is located in the Sandhills community of Hope Mills just south of Fayetteville, NC, in Cumberland County. This 12.5-acre preserve contains an impressive assemblage of pine flatwoods plants including an amazing collection of mountain laurel flower color variants and the rare white wicky (Kalmia cuneata). This preserve is also the site of a longleaf pine restoration project funded by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Partners for Fish and Wildlife Program.

Wild and remote, this spring-fed, high-elevation natural lake is surrounded by thousands of acres of forest and wetlands. The Bethlehem Authority owns most of this land and, in partnership with The Nature Conservancy, manages it as a municipal water-supply area.
There are at least 3 species of tall purple iris that are native to wetlands in the coastal plain of the Carolinas. At first glance, they all look alike to me. But at second glance, the Savannah Iris (Iris tridentata) clearly stands out for its lack of upright petals.
In a typical species of iris, there are 3 uprights petals (called "standards" by iris growers) and 3 reflexed sepals (called "falls"). In this species, the petals are not easily seen, clearly differentiating the Savannah Iris from other local species.
The structure snuggled along the top of each sepal is the style arm. On the underside of the style arm is the stigma, the surface that receives the pollen. Hidden beneath the style arm is the anther, a separate structure that produces the pollen.

Ever since I was a teenager, I have been fascinated with the granite flatrock outcrops that are found in many locations across the Georgia piedmont. These outcrops often contain circular depressions that fill with shallow soil or water. The plants that colonize the depressions vary according to the amount of soil and water available. There is a fascinating collection of native plants found solely on granite exposures, but due to their differing requirements, they can't all survive in the same depressions. However, a single depression can often contain zones with different conditions, and therefore different vegetation.
The depression in the foreground has temporarily retained a shallow pool of water due to spring rains. This depression has too little soil for most kinds of plants, and too little water for the truly aquatic species. Instead, the center of the pool is dominated by a single species: Elf Orpine (Sedum smallii), also called Diamorpha. Elsewhere in this photo, you can see other depressions with different collections of vegetation.

This was a project we created designed for the Nature Conservancy of Canada to help them stand out from other organizations. The piece incorporated a presentation folder and a brochure with unique die-cut.

The Nature Conservancy, the Bethlehem Authority, and the Pennsylvania Game Commission have preserved much of this landscape. Ecosystem restoration (including the use of prescribed burns) is ongoing.
One of the few spots where sand accumulates in any amount below the rock ledges.
