Three children were given Hebrew names on November 11, 2015.

Grand Chief Edward John, the Honourable Andrew Wilkinson, Minister of Advanced Education, Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson, representatives of the Musqueam First Nation, and Langara College students, board members, faculty, and staff, gathered on Langara’s campus today to witness a ceremony bestowing a Musqueam name on the College. The ceremony marked the first time a BC First Nation has given an Aboriginal name to a public post-secondary institution.

The event reflected the strengthening relationship between Langara College and the Musqueam people, and an acknowledgement of the College’s location on Musqueam unceded traditional territory. The name given to Langara means house of teachings, and references the advice given to a child to build their character and to guide them in to adulthood.

The naming ceremony of a seven day old boy in the village of Samécouta, in southeastern Senegal near Kedougou. An older woman reaches for a single-blade razor to shave the head of the infant as a friend of the child's mother cradles him. By tradition, a child is named a week after birth, but his hair must be shaved so that his head can be touched directly during the naming process. The hair is considered to be unclean and therefore is removed.

In Samécouta, as well as other villages and towns, women are very much present in ceremonies. At this naming ceremony, there were about thirty women present and only nine men.

A Jewish couple I know are in the process of adopting a baby girl from Korea, and the family requested my presence, as well as that of my camera, at her naming ceremony. This represented my first attempt at serious child photography, and was also the first time I had ever attended such a ceremony, which was presided over by a rabbi. Mormons, especially those with an intellectual bent, tend to have a very strong sense of affinity for Jews, and I felt entirely comfortable in attending this ritual, even though I was unfamiliar with the script, especially its Hebrew portions. I did note that this event took place on the first Sunday in December, although that is probably happenstance; however, Mormons traditionally bless newborn infants on Fast Sunday, which is typically the first Sunday of a given month. (Exceptions usually center around the time of our General Conferences, which always take place during the first weekends of April and October.)

Little Pearl was given a Hebrew name, which I can't pronounce, and I believe it is a safe bet that she will stick to her English name in day-to-day life!

I had two photoshoots on this particular day, and from the naming ceremony I went directly to MacAlpine's, where I had been invited to attend a block Christmas party and take some pictures. I ended up taking many more photos than I had expected, because the owner of the restaurant made some specific requests while I was there; but it all made for a wonderful day. A tiring one, too, but in a good way.

When I returned home, I gave my wife a copy of the script used for Pearl's naming ceremony, which she hugely enjoyed reading. I note also, in closing, that Pearl's big day happened to fall on Sunday, December 7 -- which, considering her name, seemed quite appropriate.
