Grand Chief Edward John, the Honourable Andrew Wilkinson, Minister of Advanced Education, Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson, representatives of the Musqueam First Nation, and Langara College students, board members, faculty, and staff, gathered on Langara’s campus today to witness a ceremony bestowing a Musqueam name on the College. The ceremony marked the first time a BC First Nation has given an Aboriginal name to a public post-secondary institution.
The event reflected the strengthening relationship between Langara College and the Musqueam people, and an acknowledgement of the College’s location on Musqueam unceded traditional territory. The name given to Langara means house of teachings, and references the advice given to a child to build their character and to guide them in to adulthood.

Today’s the day - a very hot day. The naming ceremony of the ‘Peter Saw’, lifeboat D-785 which was donated by Hilary Saw and named in memory of Hilary’s late husband. The new D-class is specifically designed for the Thames, and will partner its sister lifeboat, D-743 ‘Olwen and Tom’, also donated by Peter and Hilary Saw in December 2010 and named after her parents Gwladys Olwen Martin and Thomas Frederick Shelton.
The ceremony was lead by Tim Ody the Teddington Lifeboat Station Manager. Charles Hunter-Pease the Chairman of the RNLI attended and the blessing was made by the Reverend Joe Moffatt of St Mary with St Albans church.
The highlight of the day was Hilary officially naming D-785 the ‘Peter Saw’ by pouring over a bottle of spring water over the bow as her husband was teetotal so champagne was not appropriate! Everyone was invited to join in the naming by calling out “We name this lifeboat Peter Saw”.
This is the crew of the ‘Peter Saw’ on it’s first inaugural ‘dip’ in the river following the naming ceremony. Today was also the first time that I have taken and used both cameras (my usual 5D Mk 3 and also my old 50D) so that both my 24-70mm and 70-200mm would be at the ready for a mix of shots.
Here’s some more images from the day... www.facebook.com/Emma-Durnford-LRPS-Photographer-18630166...

New Redcar Atlantic 85 class lifeboat B-858 Leicester Challenge III is demontrated to the assembled guests after being formally named.
Fijian member of the Arafura Outrigger Canoe Paddling Club, Josaia Waqavakatoga, conducted the blessing and naming of the new canoes.
I feel very honoured that club members chose two of the names I submitted (Kai Mana and Makani Kai - Hawaiian for Power of the Ocean and Ocean Breeze) for the new names. The third canoe was named Wakaya after an island in the Lomaiviti group in Fiji. I have been to that island so I feel a strong sense of connection to all the new canoes.
